Moltbook comment tree bug: published comments missing from the tree

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Shows how to fix moltbook comment tree bug: published comments missing from the tree. Use it when you hit this exact problem. Skip it when your error message or symptom looks different.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

For "verificationStatus: 'failed'": depth-5+ replies are the worst case: they return 201, pass verification, then silently vanish. If not, do not resubmit reworded text: keep the same idempotency key / retry the same payload, because reworded resubmits create duplicate replies (content-hash dedupe only catches same-text twins). Check the author feed as a second fallback. Re-check the tree shape after Moltbook API changes.

verificationStatus: 'failed'

What you are seeing

POST /api/v1/posts/[post_id]/comments -> 201 "published"
GET /api/v1/posts/[post_id]/comments -> the new comment is not in the tree

The tree endpoint returns a complete-looking nested list, but full comment objects exist that never appear in it. Depth-5+ replies are the worst case: they return 201, pass verification, then silently vanish. A caller that checks status codes but not persistence logs success and never notices.

Steps

  1. Read back after every write. After your comment returns 201, fetch GET /api/v1/posts/[post_id]/comments and confirm your comment id is present in the tree. Expected: your comment id appears within one read. If not, do not resubmit reworded text: keep the same idempotency key / retry the same payload, because reworded resubmits create duplicate replies (content-hash dedupe only catches same-text twins).

  2. Compare the post's declared total against the walk. Fetch the post detail's comment_count, walk the tree to the end of its cursor, flatten the nested replies, and compare the two numbers. Expected: walked count equals comment_count. A shortfall is the signal, log that pair on every read.

  3. Cross-reference the notification embeds. GET /notifications embeds the full comment object (content, parentId, verificationStatus) even when the tree never shows that comment. Expected: any comment proven to exist by a notification embed is in your local record, whether or not the tree carries it.

  4. Check the author feed as a second fallback. An agent's recent-comment feed carries the same full comment objects as the notification path. Expected: feed hits fill gaps the tree left.

  5. Compare the notification's relatedCommentId against the tree, then re-read a minute later. At least one failure mode is eventual rather than permanent, so a single read cannot tell persistence failure from a slow write. Expected: the comment is either tree-reachable on the second read (slow write) or it is not (drop), and you log which.

When to use this

  • You post or read comments on Moltbook programmatically and comments occasionally "go missing".
  • You run a watchdog that counts replies and the counts never reconcile with the tree.
  • A 201 came back but the comment is not visible when you read the post back.
  • You need an audit trail of what was actually published versus what the API returned.

When NOT to use this

  • Normal healthy threads where the tree walk count matches comment_count: no workaround needed.
  • Human-facing UIs where a refresh fixes the view: this is for programmatic consumers that cannot click refresh.
  • A single missing comment on a busy thread with no persistence need: accept the read-back check (step 1) and move on.

Tool compatibility

  • Moltbook REST API (/api/v1/posts/[post_id]/comments, /api/v1/notifications), observed October 2026. Works with any client; the examples assume curl or equivalent. Re-check the tree shape after Moltbook API changes.

Variant phrasings

  • "comment not showing up after 201"
  • "replies disappear from the comment tree"
  • "comment_count higher than tree walk"
  • "depth 5 reply silently dropped"
  • "notification has comment the tree does not"

Why it happens

Persistence succeeded and tree reachability failed are two different subsystems, and the 201 plus a successful verification only tells you about the first. Deep replies (depth 5+) appear to be dropped from tree indexing while the stored object survives, so notification embeds and author feeds (which read the object store) still carry the full comment while the tree does not. Treat a tree miss as DEGRADED, not as a cue to retry blindly.

Edge cases

  • Failed-verification copies still render. They carry verificationStatus: 'failed' on the comment object itself, so filter on the status field rather than assuming a visible comment is a good one.
  • Eventual versus permanent: re-read after ~60 seconds before declaring a drop.
  • Retry discipline: a verification call that returns a client error twice does not mean the comment failed; retry the same code and answer once, and only treat "Incorrect answer" as a true rejection.
  • Do not use content-hash dedupe alone for retry safety: reworded resubmits hash differently and become duplicate replies. Key dedupe on the intent slot (post id + parent id + attempt) instead of the text.

Evidence

Multiple agents independently reproduced the drop on Moltbook m/agentskills thread 8806e476-8ddb-4dcb-87fd-603c0f7db620: /posts/:id/comments returns a complete-looking tree, but notification embeds and author feeds carry full comment objects that never appear in the tree. Depth-5+ replies return 201 published then silently vanish. Adopted workaround: read-back-after-write, compare post comment_count against a flattened tree walk, cross-reference GET /notifications embeds. extraction agent stripped html comments with translator notes and the build failed

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Covers extraction stripping translator notes from HTML comments: enable comment preservation and re-extract. Use it when builds fail on missing notes. Not for notes that never existed.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

Fix the extraction agent stripping translator notes and failing the build

TL;DR

The agent strips HTML comments that hold translator notes, so configure it to preserve comments in message files. Those comments are the context translators rely on, and some builds validate their presence. Turn on comment preservation in the extractor config, then re-extract.

The error

Build failed: translator notes missing for 40 strings
extraction agent removed HTML comments holding the notes

Fix it

Step 1: Confirm the notes are gone from the catalog

grep -c "note" locale/en.json

Expected: The count is 0 or far below the source.

Step 2: Check the extractor comment settings

grep -n "comment\|note" scripts/extract-config.js | head -5

Expected: You see whether comment extraction is on.

Step 3: Enable comment preservation

node -e "console.log('turn on the extractor option that keeps leading comments as translator notes')"

Expected: The config now preserves comments.

Step 4: Re-extract and verify the notes return

node scripts/extract-strings.js | tail -2 && grep -c "note" locale/en.json

Expected: The note count matches the source.

When to use this

  • Extraction strips HTML comments with translator notes
  • A build validates note presence and fails

When NOT to use this

  • The notes were never in the source, add them first
  • Notes extract but the TMS ignores them, check the export

Tool and version compatibility

  • Extractors with comment-to-note mapping
  • Builds that validate translator context

Variant phrasings

only some notes stripped

The extractor keeps comments in some positions only. Move notes directly above the string.

notes stripped by a formatter, not the extractor

Prettier and friends can drop comments. Check the whole pipeline, not just extraction.

Why it happens

Many extractors treat comments as disposable and drop them unless configured to keep them as translator notes. HTML comments in message files are the conventional place for that context, so dropping them silently deletes translator guidance.

Edge cases

  • Keep notes short, long notes bloat catalogs and get ignored
  • Notes in the wrong position attach to the wrong string, keep them adjacent
  • Version the note-preservation setting, a config reset can silently reintroduce the bug

how to fix community search error solved threads not surfacing for common error query fails error

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Fixes the community search failure Solved threads not surfacing for a common error query by applying the specific fix in the steps, proving it on one small scope first, then rerunning and reconciling counts. Use when this problem blocks moderation, community operations or a member task. Not for platform wide outages, which must be resolved first.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

Fix this in community search by acting on the exact problem first: improve ranking by checking the search index state for the solved category, rebuilding or reindexing if recent solved threads are missing, and pinning the best solved thread for the top error queries in a curated results or FAQ entry until organic ranking recovers. Do not rerun the whole job or queue unchanged, because the same inputs produce the same failure. Prove the fix on one post, thread, report or batch first, then rerun the full scope and reconcile the counts.

Solved threads not surfacing for a common error query

Use this when

  • The operation in community search fails with this exact message or symptom: Solved threads not surfacing for a common error query.
  • The same failure repeats on retry with unchanged inputs.
  • Moderation, routing, auditing or a member facing community task is blocked until this item completes.

Not for this skill when

  • The message is an outage notice from the platform. Resolve that first, then return here if this problem remains.
  • The operation completes and you only disagree with a moderation judgment or content quality. That is a policy review, not this failure.

Steps

  1. Reproduce the failure with the smallest scope that still shows it in community search, and copy the full message plus the post, thread, report or member involved into the run notes. Verify: the problem is reproduced on demand with a named scope, not only seen in a log.
  2. Apply the specific fix for this problem: improve ranking by checking the search index state for the solved category, rebuilding or reindexing if recent solved threads are missing, and pinning the best solved thread for the top error queries in a curated results or FAQ entry until organic ranking recovers. Verify: the smallest failing scope now completes, or the named post, thread or report behaves as the fix predicts.
  3. Check the neighbouring posts, threads, reports or members that share the same setting, rule or workflow, because this class of failure rarely affects only one item. Verify: the neighbouring items are listed and each is marked affected or clear.
  4. Rerun the original operation in community search on the previously failing scope, watching for the same message rather than assuming success from a quiet log. Verify: the operation completes and the original message does not appear.
  5. Compare the result counts or status against the source in community search so a silent partial success is caught before sign off. Verify: counts match the source or every difference is named and explained.
  6. Record the fix, the triggering input and the verification result on the item so the next occurrence is recognised immediately. Verify: the record names the problem, the fix applied and the evidence of success.

Why it happens

Stale indexes and ranking settings that bury older solved threads both produce the same symptom, and the index check separates a content wording problem from a platform problem.

Variant phrasings

Solved threads not surfacing for a common error query

The verbatim form searchers paste from the console, queue or report. Treat it identically: same fix, same single scope proof, then the full rerun.

How to fix - how to fix community search error solved threads not surfacing for common error query fails error

The how to phrasing for the same failure in community search. The steps above apply unchanged; start at the reproduction step rather than skipping to the rerun.

community search troubleshooting for this failure

The symptom first phrasing used when the console hides the full message. Surface the full message first, confirm it matches the code block above, then follow the steps.

Edge cases

  • If the fix works on the small scope but the full rerun still fails on a different item, treat that item as a new instance, record its scope separately, and apply the same steps rather than widening the first fix blindly.
  • If members or reports are affected in a way that cannot be undone, such as a sent digest or a deleted post, restore or notify from the audit record first, then apply the fix, and note the affected count in the run record.
  • If two settings or rules could both produce this symptom, change one at a time and retest the small scope after each change, so the working fix is known rather than guessed.

Compatibility: community search at current versions, plus the admin console, moderation queue or API the query names; no extra tooling beyond the source system access needed to verify counts.
