veeam error code 32768 failed to create VSS snapshot

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Fixes Veeam error code 32768 failed to create VSS snapshot by stabilising VSS writers, shadow copy storage and competing snapshot providers. Use when guest processing fails before data transfer starts. Not for a hypervisor snapshot failure with no VSS involvement.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

Do not start by reinstalling the agent: check the guest VSS writers first, give the shadow copy storage room to grow, and remove competing snapshot providers from other backup tools. Error 32768 in Veeam almost always means the in guest VSS snapshot set never formed, so no backup data was ever read. Prove every writer is stable, then retry a single VM with application aware processing.

veeam error code 32768 failed to create VSS snapshot

Use this when

  • Veeam fails during guest processing with code 32768 and a VSS snapshot message.
  • The same VM backs up fine with application aware processing turned off.
  • Windows Event Viewer on the guest shows VSS or volsnap errors at job time.

Not for this skill when

  • The error is a hypervisor snapshot failure on a Linux guest with no VSS. Use the snapshot creation skill instead.
  • VSS writers are stable and the failure happens later during data transfer. That is a transport problem, not this one.

Steps

  1. Inside the guest, run vssadmin list writers from an elevated prompt and note any writer not in a stable state, especially the SQL, Exchange, System and ASR writers for the workload on that VM. A failed or waiting for completion writer blocks the whole snapshot set. Verify: every listed writer shows stable with no error after a fresh check
  2. Check shadow copy storage with vssadmin list shadowstorage and confirm each protected volume has allocated space and a maximum that is not tiny or already full. Raise the maximum on a volume with room, ideally to at least ten percent, rather than deleting production shadow copies blindly. Verify: shadowstorage shows headroom on every protected volume
  3. Read the guest Application log around the job time for VSS, volsnap and SPP entries and match the timestamp to the Veeam failure. Note any third party hardware provider listed by vssadmin list providers, since snapshot providers from old storage or backup tools commonly hijack the request. Verify: you have one named provider or event source to act on
  4. Remove or disable a stale third party VSS provider or a leftover backup agent that is no longer used, then restart the Volume Shadow Copy and Veeam guest processing services in a window. Do not delete the Microsoft software provider. Verify: vssadmin list providers shows only expected providers and the services start cleanly
  5. Restart the failed writers by restarting their owning services, for example the database or application service for a failed application writer, then recheck writer state. If a writer fails again immediately, repair that application first instead of retrying the backup. Verify: the previously failed writer returns to stable and stays there for ten minutes
  6. Retry one VM with application aware processing on and watch writer state during the job. If it still times out, extend the VSS preparation time in the job guest processing settings in small steps and check for slow disks under snapshot load. Verify: the job passes guest processing and writes a restore point with application consistency

Why it happens

VSS coordinates writers for each application, freezes writes briefly, and asks a provider to create shadow copies of every volume in the set. If one writer does not respond, the shadow copy storage is full, or a stale provider takes the request and fails, the whole set aborts and Veeam surfaces the generic 32768 result. Nothing is wrong with the backup files because the job never reached the read phase. Slow storage makes it worse because writers only hold the freeze for a limited window. Compatibility: Veeam Agent and Veeam Backup and Replication 11 and 12 on Windows guests with application aware processing.

Variants and edge cases

veeam 32768 failed to create VSS snapshot SQL VM

On database VMs the SqlServerWriter is the usual blocker. Check database auto close settings, volumes holding logs, and whether a native database snapshot or backup ran at the same minute before retrying.

veeam VSS snapshot failed error code 32768 after Windows update

Updates can leave writers waiting for completion until a reboot clears the state. Schedule the reboot, recheck writers before the window closes, and do not stack repeated backup retries against a half updated guest.

could not create VSS snapshot on Hyper-V guest

The same checks apply, plus the Hyper-V integration services inside the guest. An outdated integration version can make the host request fail even when in guest writers look healthy.

veeam "failed to create snapshot" error

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Fixes Veeam failed to create snapshot errors: free stalled VSS or hypervisor snapshots, fix writer and space issues, then retry so the job can quiesce the VM or volume. Use when Veeam reports it cannot create a snapshot. Not for snapshot consolidation failures after backup.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

Failed to create snapshot means the job stopped before data transfer because the hypervisor or VSS snapshot never materialised. Check for leftover snapshots, stuck VSS writers, and datastore or volume free space first, in that order. Clear the blocker, restart the relevant writer services if a writer is in a failed state, and retry the job.

veeam "failed to create snapshot" error

Use this when

  • Veeam job log shows failed to create snapshot for a VM or agent volume.
  • Hyper-V or VMware snapshot creation also fails when tried manually.
  • VSS writers list one or more writers in a failed or waiting state.

Not for this skill when

  • Snapshots are created but consolidation fails afterwards. That is a consolidation problem.
  • The snapshot exists but data reading fails with unable to retrieve next block.

Steps

  1. Open the job log and note whether the failure is at the hypervisor snapshot call or the guest VSS freeze step. Verify: the failing layer is identified
  2. Check the VM for existing snapshots and remove stale or orphaned ones through the hypervisor manager, watching for a snapshot left by a previous failed job. Verify: the VM snapshot tree is clean or consolidation is running normally
  3. On the guest or agent machine run vssadmin list writers and note any writer not in a stable state. Verify: every writer reports stable with no error, or the faulty writer is named
  4. Restart the Volume Shadow Copy service and the faulty writer service, then confirm datastore or volume free space is above 10 percent. Verify: writers are stable and space is sufficient
  5. Retry the Veeam job and watch it pass the snapshot step into data transfer. Verify: the job progresses past snapshot creation

Variant phrasings

veeam unable to create snapshot hyper-v

The Hyper-V specific phrasing.

veeam snapshot creation failed vss

The VSS-worded variant.

veeam cannot create snapshot datastore space

The space-cause phrasing.

Compatibility: Veeam Backup and Replication 11 and 12 for VMware vSphere 7 and 8 and Hyper-V 2019 and 2022, plus Veeam Agent for Windows 6 with VSS-based jobs.

Why it happens

Snapshot creation depends on three layers agreeing at once: the hypervisor must have room and no conflicting snapshot task, the guest VSS framework must freeze writers cleanly, and no previous orphaned snapshot can block the new one. A failure in any layer aborts the job before a single block is read, and the Veeam message rarely names the layer directly.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • A writer stuck in waiting for completion after a reboot usually needs its owning service restarted, not a server reboot.
  • Antivirus real-time scanning on VSS temporary areas can time out freezes on busy servers.
  • Never delete snapshot files directly from the datastore. Always consolidate through the hypervisor manager.

veeam "VSS: failed to freeze guest"

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Fixes Veeam VSS failed to freeze guest errors: stabilise the named VSS writer, clear stuck snapshots and retry with application-consistent processing. Use when Veeam cannot freeze a Windows guest. Not for Linux file-level backups without VSS.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

VSS failed to freeze guest means Volume Shadow Copy writers inside the Windows guest did not reach a frozen, application-consistent state in time. Find the writer in a failed state with vssadmin, restart its owning service, clear any stuck shadow copies, and check free space on every volume in the set before retrying the job.

veeam "VSS: failed to freeze guest"

Use this when

  • Veeam job fails at guest processing with VSS failed to freeze guest.
  • vssadmin list writers shows a writer in failed, timed out or waiting state.
  • SQL, Exchange or Hyper-V guests fail while simple file servers pass.

Not for this skill when

  • The hypervisor snapshot itself cannot be created. That layer fails before VSS freeze matters.
  • Linux guests using pre-freeze scripts. Their freeze path is script based, not VSS.

Steps

  1. On the guest run vssadmin list writers and vssadmin list shadows, noting any writer not stable and any orphaned shadow copies. Verify: faulty writers and stale shadows are named
  2. Restart the service that owns each failed writer, for example SQL Server VSS Writer or the Hyper-V integration services, then recheck writer state. Verify: all writers report stable with no error
  3. Delete orphaned shadow copies with vssadmin delete shadows for the affected volume and confirm at least 15 percent free space on each volume in the snapshot set. Verify: shadows are clean and space is sufficient
  4. Check the guest event log for VSS errors in the freeze window and fix disk or provider errors found there. Verify: no new VSS errors appear on a manual shadow copy test
  5. Retry the Veeam job with application-aware processing and watch it pass the freeze step. Verify: the job reaches data transfer and completes

Variant phrasings

vss failed to freeze guest veeam sql

The SQL guest phrasing.

veeam vss freeze timeout writer failed

The writer-state variant.

veeam application aware processing failed freeze

The job-setting wording.

Compatibility: Veeam Backup and Replication 11 and 12 with application-aware processing on Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 guests, including SQL Server and Exchange writers.

Why it happens

A freeze is a coordinated pause: Veeam asks VSS to flush and hold writers for seconds while the snapshot is taken. Writers that are already failed, overloaded databases that cannot checkpoint in time, low volume space for shadow storage, or competing backup agents taking their own snapshots all break the coordination and the freeze times out.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Two backup products freezing the same guest at the same hour collide. Stagger schedules.
  • A writer that fails again immediately after restart usually has a corrupt database or log state underneath. Fix the application, not VSS.
  • Shadow storage set too small on busy volumes caps how long a freeze can be held. Raise the limit on data volumes.
