salesforce case api INVALID_FIELD error

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Fix Salesforce INVALID_FIELD on Case writes: the field name you sent isn't a field Salesforce recognizes in that context. Use when Case inserts or updates fail with INVALID_FIELD, when a field works in the UI but not the API, or when a previously working integration breaks after a config change. Not for 401 session errors, validation rule failures, or required-field errors.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

INVALIDFIELD means the API name in your payload doesn't match any field on Case that the running user can see. The usual suspects: using the label instead of the API name, a custom field missing its _c suffix, or field-level security hiding the field from the integration user. The error message names the field; believe it.

The query

salesforce case api INVALID_FIELD error

Use this when

  • Case insert or update fails with INVALID_FIELD
  • A field visible in the UI fails through the API
  • A working integration breaks after an admin change

Not for

  • Session expired or invalid session id
  • Validation rule rejections (different error)
  • REQUIREDFIELDMISSING errors

Steps

1. Use the API name, not the label

The UI shows 'Case Reason'; the API wants Reason. Custom fields need the _c suffix: PriorityScore__c, not Priority Score. Read the field list from Setup, Object Manager, Case, Fields, and use the API Name column verbatim.

Expected output: every field in your payload matching an API name from the field list.

2. Check field-level security for the integration user

A field the admin can see may be invisible to the integration user's profile, which makes the API report it as invalid. Open the field's security settings and confirm the integration profile has read and edit access.

Expected output: the integration profile granted access to every field you write.

3. Describe the object to confirm

Call the describe endpoint on Case and search for your field names in the response. If a field isn't in the describe output, it doesn't exist for this user, full stop. This beats guessing from the UI.

Expected output: a describe response containing every field your payload sends.

4. Audit recent admin changes

INVALID_FIELD that appears overnight is usually a renamed, deleted, or secured field. Check Setup Audit Trail for changes to Case fields around the time the errors started.

Expected output: the audit trail entry explaining which field changed and when.

Variant phrasings

salesforce invalid_field on case insert

Steps 1 through 3 are the complete diagnosis chain.

salesforce custom field invalid through api

Step 1 first: the __c suffix is missing more often than anything else.

Why it happens

Salesforce has two names for everything: the label humans see and the API name code uses. The API only speaks the second, and it also enforces visibility per profile. So the same field can be perfectly valid for an admin in the UI and invalid for the integration user through the API, which is exactly the failure that confuses people.

Edge cases

  • Compound fields (like addresses) behave specially; write their components, not the compound.
  • Field names are case-sensitive in some API paths. Copy them exactly.
  • Managed package fields carry a namespace prefix. Don't drop it.

Salesforce Bulk API InvalidBatch failed to process query when syncing account health fields to the CRM

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Fixes a Salesforce Bulk API InvalidBatch failure when syncing account health fields to the CRM, by finding the bad batch, query, or payload behind it. Use when a bulk health sync partially fails. Not for single-record API update errors.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

InvalidBatch tells you the job container was fine and one batch inside it was not, so stop restarting the whole sync and go batch hunting. Open the Bulk API job, read the failed batchs own error, and you will usually find a malformed SOQL query, a CSV payload problem, or an unsupported operation in that batch alone. Fix that batch, resubmit only the failed portion, and the health fields land without a risky full reload.

Salesforce Bulk API InvalidBatch failed to process query when syncing account health fields to the CRM

Use this when

  • A Salesforce Bulk API job completes with failed batches in InvalidBatch state
  • Some account health fields updated and others are stale from the same run
  • The same sync worked at smaller volume or with a narrower query

Not for this skill when

  • Every batch fails identically from the job creation step, which points at authentication or API version instead
  • Single record updates through the UI also fail, suggesting validation rules rather than bulk formatting

Steps

  1. Retrieve the job and its batch list through the Bulk API or your integration tool, and capture the state message for each InvalidBatch batch rather than the jobs summary line. The batch-level message names the real problem, such as a malformed query, an invalid field, or a formatting error in the records payload. Verify: the failing batches and their individual messages are listed
  2. If the failing batch is a query batch, take its SOQL into Salesforce Workbench or the query editor and run it there unchanged. Bulk query rejects some constructs that interactive SOQL tolerates, including certain aggregate and date literal patterns, and a field renamed in the org breaks every batch that selects it. Fix the query to the Bulk-supported shape and confirm it returns rows in the test. Verify: the corrected query executes in the test tool and returns the expected account set
  3. If the failing batch is an update batch, inspect its payload file around the reported row. Common killers are unescaped commas and quotes in CSV, a health score sent as text with locale decimal separators, empty strings sent for numeric fields instead of null markers, and external id values containing characters that break the file structure. Regenerate the payload with a real CSV writer and explicit null handling. Verify: the regenerated payload passes a local parse and row count check matching the source extract
  4. Check field level reality in the org. Confirm the health fields exist in this org, the integration profile can edit them, and no new validation rule or duplicate rule rejects the values the sync sends, for example a rule demanding a score reason whenever the score changes. Test one record update through the REST API with the same payload values to surface org-side rejections in plain language. Verify: a single record updates cleanly with the same values, or the org rule blocking it is named
  5. Resubmit only the failed batches as a new job, keep the successful batches out of it, and reconcile by counting accounts whose health fields carry todays sync timestamp against the source extract count. Reconcile on counts and samples, not on job status alone. Verify: resubmitted batches complete and the reconciled account count matches the source
  6. Harden the sync. Validate payloads against the org schema before submission, split batches by operation and segment so one bad shape cannot poison a whole run, and alert on any batch ending in a failed state with its message attached to the alert so the next occurrence arrives pre-diagnosed. Verify: the pre-flight validation and batch state alert are in place and tested with a deliberately bad batch

Why it happens

A bulk job is a set of independent batches, and Salesforce marks a batch InvalidBatch when its own content cannot be processed, while sibling batches succeed. Integrations that only watch job status either miss the partial failure or retry the entire load, duplicating updates and still failing on the same bad batch. Partial staleness in the health fields is the visible symptom of that one poisoned batch being skipped run after run.

Compatibility: Salesforce Bulk API 1.0 and 2.0 job and batch model, Workbench query testing, and current Salesforce org validation and profile controls.

Variants and edge cases

Salesforce Bulk API InvalidBatch state message meaning

['The meaning-first phrasing. InvalidBatch is a batch-level verdict, so always drill to the batch state message before changing job level settings.']

bulk query batch failed health sync Salesforce

['The query-batch variant. Reproduce the SOQL outside the integration first, it is the fastest way to separate query problems from payload problems.']

bulk update CSV batch invalid account health fields

['The payload variant, usually escaping or type formatting. Diff a failing row against a succeeding row from the same file to spot the pattern quickly.']

Edge cases to work through before you close the incident:

  • Bulk API 1.0 and 2.0 differ in how jobs, batches, and errors surface. Confirm which version your integration uses before following menu paths or endpoint shapes.
  • Hard delete and some operations need special permissions and behave differently in batches. Keep operation types in separate jobs so their failures stay legible.
  • External id fields with case-sensitive values can match a different record than intended. Sample-check updated records by account name, not only by counts.

INVALID_FIELD_FOR_INSERT_UPDATE" salesforce error

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Fixes Salesforce INVALID_FIELD_FOR_INSERT_UPDATE: the payload names a field that does not exist or is not writable on that object. Describe the object to get real API names. Use when a write fails naming this error. Not for validation-rule or trigger errors.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

The field name in your payload is wrong: a typo, a label instead of the API name, or a field that is read-only on this object. Call describe on the object to list the real API names and their writable flags, fix the mapping, and retry.

Error

[ {
"message" : "Unable to create/update fields: AccountNumber__c. Please check the security settings of this field and verify that it is read/write for your profile or permission set.",
  "errorCode" : "INVALID_FIELD_FOR_INSERT_UPDATE",
  "fields" : [ "AccountNumber__c" ]
} ]

Steps

  1. Read the fields array; it names the exact offending field. Expected: you know which mapping entry to fix.
  2. Call describe on the object (GET /services/data/vXX.X/sobjects/Lead/describe) and search the fields list for the name. Expected: you see whether it exists and its exact API name.
  3. Check the updateable and createable flags on that field in the describe output. Expected: false on either explains the rejection.
  4. Fix the mapping: use the API name (often with __c for custom fields), not the label. Expected: the payload field names match describe exactly.
  5. If the field exists but is not writable for the integration user, grant field-level security or remove it from the payload. Expected: the write succeeds.

When to use

  • Any Salesforce write fails with INVALIDFIELDFORINSERTUPDATE.
  • An agent's field mapping worked on one object and fails on another (different API names).
  • After a managed package upgrade renamed or removed a field.

When not to use

  • FIELDCUSTOMVALIDATION_EXCEPTION (rule fired on a valid field).
  • Required-field-missing errors (the field is right, the value is absent).

Tool compatibility

  • Salesforce REST, SOAP, and Bulk APIs; describe calls on standard and custom objects.
  • Any ETL or agent that maps source columns to Salesforce fields.

Variant phrasings

Unable to create/update fields

The long form; check the API name and the read/write flags.

INVALIDFIELDFORINSERTUPDATE on __c fields

Usually a renamed custom field or a label used instead of the API name.

Why it happens

Labels and API names differ, custom fields need the __c suffix, and some fields (formulas, rollups, audit fields) are never writable. Payloads built from UI labels or stale schemas hit all three.

Edge cases

  • Field-level security can make a field invisible to the integration user, which surfaces as this error rather than a permissions error.
  • Person account fields exist on Account but not on Contact; mapping the wrong object gives this error.
  • Describe output is cached by some clients; re-fetch after a schema change.
