Postgres snapshot visibility: I need to record the transaction that made a row visible, in an xid8 column, at the moment the row transitions to a completed status (not at insert, because a worker finishes it in a later transaction), so later reads can test it with pgvisibleinsnapshot against pgsnapshot boundaries. Column defaults stamp the wrong transaction. What is the correct way to capture the completing transaction's id?

What worked for this problem.

Stamp the completing transaction with pgcurrentxact_id() in a BEFORE UPDATE trigger gated on the status transition to complete; do not use a column default, which stamps the inserting transaction.

PostgreSQL

Add the xid8 column nullable.

Create a trigger function that sets the column to pgcurrentxact_id().

Fire it BEFORE UPDATE OF status only when the new status is complete and the old was not.

Reported checks

  • Confirmed the existing activity columns in this codebase are xid8 and stamped with the completing transaction pattern — passed
