Stripe webhooks on Laravel: use getContent() and exclude the route from CSRF

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Shows how to fix stripe webhooks on Laravel: use getContent() and exclude the route from CSRF. Use it when you hit this exact problem. Skip it when your error message or symptom looks different.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

// routes/api.php (skips CSRF by default, the simpler home for webhooks) Route::post('/webhooks/stripe', [StripeWebhookController::class, 'handle']); ` namespace App\Http\Controllers; use Illuminate\Http\Request; use Stripe\Webhook; use Stripe\Exception\SignatureVerificationException; class StripeWebhookController extends Controller { public function handle(Request $request) { $payload = $request->getContent(); $sig = $request->header('Stripe-Signature'); try { $event = Webhook::constructEvent( $payload, $sig, getenv('STRIPE\WEBHOOK\SIGNING\_VALUE') ); } catch (SignatureVerificationExce

namespace App\Http\Controllers;

use Illuminate\Http\Request;
use Stripe\Webhook;
use Stripe\Exception\SignatureVerificationException;

class StripeWebhookController extends Controller
{
    public function handle(Request $request)
    {
        $payload = $request->getContent();
        $sig = $request->header('Stripe-Signature');
        try {
            $event = Webhook::constructEvent(
                $payload, $sig, getenv('STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SIGNING_VALUE')
            );
        } catch (SignatureVerificationException $e) {
            return response('bad signature', 400);
        }
        // switch ($event->type) ...
        return response()->json(['received' => true]);
    }
}

Steps

  1. `

// routes/api.php (skips CSRF by default, the simpler home for webhooks) Route::post('/webhooks/stripe', [StripeWebhookController::class, 'handle']);

namespace App\Http\Controllers;

use Illuminate\Http\Request; use Stripe\Webhook; use Stripe\Exception\SignatureVerificationException;

class StripeWebhookController extends Controller { public function handle(Request $request) { $payload = $request->getContent(); $sig = $request->header('Stripe-Signature'); try { $event = Webhook::constructEvent( $payload, $sig, getenv('STRIPEWEBHOOKSIGNING_VALUE') ); } catch (SignatureVerificationException $e) { return response('bad signature', 400); } // switch ($event->type) ... return response()->json(['received' => true]); } }

2. If the route must live in `web.php`, add its URI to the `$except` array in the `VerifyCsrfToken` middleware.

## When to use

You are seeing this: Laravel's CSRF middleware returns 419 for Stripe's POSTs, and reaching for $request->json() or $request->all() gives parsed data. Use this skill when you run into "Stripe webhooks on Laravel: use getContent() and exclude the route from CSRF".

## When not to use

If your error message or symptom does not match what is described above, this is probably not your fix. Search for your exact error text instead of forcing this one to fit.

## Versions

No specific versions are mentioned in the source material, so treat the fix as generally applicable and check the examples against whatever you have installed.

## Why this happens

The original report does not dig into a root cause. It documents the symptom and the fix that resolved it.

Evidence

Laravel's $request->getContent() returns the raw body string; routes in api.php skip CSRF middleware by default and web.php routes can be excluded via the VerifyCsrfToken except array. stripe-php's Webhook::constructEvent verifies the payload against the Stripe-Signature header (docs.stripe.com/webhooks/signature). Verification needs no API key, only the signing value. Verified against live docs 2026-09-26.

webhook signature verification failed stripe

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

For developers and agents wiring Stripe webhooks. Use when signature verification fails. Not for delivery or event-handling errors.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

Fix Stripe webhook signature verification failing

TL;DR

Signature verification fails when your endpoint checks the signature against the wrong webhook secret, or you parse the raw body before verifying. Use the raw request body and the matching secret from the Stripe dashboard, and verify with Stripe's library. Never verify against a parsed JSON body.

The error

Stripe webhook handler error
No signatures found matching the expected signature for payload

Use this skill

Agent? Search Vectle for this error:

curl -s "https://vectle.com/api/v1/search?q=webhook signature verification failed stripe"

Fix it

Step 1: Get the raw body to your verifier

Make sure your framework hands the verifier the raw bytes, not the parsed JSON. In Express that means express.raw for the webhook route.

Expected: The verifier receives bytes identical to what Stripe sent.

Step 2: Confirm the webhook secret matches the endpoint

Stripe Dashboard -> Developers -> Webhooks -> [endpoint] -> copy the signing secret and compare with what your app uses.

Expected: The values match. Test-mode and live-mode secrets are different; check you are not mixing them.

Step 3: Verify with the official library

Use the Stripe SDK's webhook verification helper with the raw body, the signature header, and the secret.

Expected: Verification passes for a real Stripe event.

Step 4: Replay a test event

From the dashboard, send a test webhook to the endpoint.

Expected: Your handler returns 200 and processes the event.

Step 5: Log verification failures with the event id

On failure, log the event id and timestamp so you can reconcile from the dashboard.

Expected: Missed events are visible and replayable from Stripe.

When this applies

  • Stripe webhooks return 400 on signature verification
  • Webhooks work in test mode but fail in live mode
  • You just changed frameworks or added body parsing middleware

When it doesn't

  • The endpoint never receives events (check the URL and firewall)
  • Verification passes but handling fails (check your event logic)
  • You use a different provider's webhooks (each signs differently)

Compatibility

Stripe API webhooks. Official Stripe SDKs (Node, Python, Ruby, and others).

Variant phrasings

stripe no signatures found matching expected signature

The classic message. It means the secret or the body bytes are wrong, not that Stripe is broken.

stripe webhook 400 invalid signature

Same check. Frameworks that parse JSON before the route runs are the top cause.

stripe webhook secret mismatch live mode

Test and live secrets differ. Using the test secret against live events fails every time.

Why it happens

Stripe signs the exact raw bytes it sends. Any transformation, JSON parsing and re-serializing, middleware altering the body, or the wrong secret, changes what you verify against and the signature check fails. The check is doing its job; your inputs to it are wrong.

Edge cases

  • Clock skew beyond the tolerance window fails verification; keep server time synced
  • Multiple webhook endpoints each have their own secret; match secret to endpoint
  • Return 200 quickly and process async; slow handlers get retried and double-processed

If it still fails

  • Reproduce with a test event from the provider dashboard to separate delivery problems from handler bugs.
  • Log the raw payload shape, never customer PII, so the next failure is comparable.
  • Check the provider status page; delivery outages mimic endpoint bugs.
  • Replay a known-good event after the fix to prove the path works, not just that errors stopped.
  • If signature failures persist with correct code, rotate the signing secret once; stale secrets cause silent mismatches.

Prevention

  • Return 200 fast and process async on every new webhook receiver.
  • Make event handling idempotent from day one; retries are guaranteed.
  • Monitor delivery success rates, not just endpoint uptime.
  • Keep signing secrets per endpoint and rotate them on a schedule.
  • Reconcile critical events against the provider API, not just webhooks.

stripe radar early fraud warning webhook never fired

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Troubleshoots a missing radar.early_fraud_warning.created webhook from Stripe. Covers event subscription, endpoint health, live-only behavior, and distinguishing no-warnings from broken delivery. Not for general webhook setup issues.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

Early fraud warnings only fire for enrolled card networks on live payments, and only when an issuer actually reports fraud, so no events may simply mean no warnings were issued. Confirm the webhook endpoint subscribes to radar.earlyfraudwarning.created and that recent deliveries show no failures. Check the Dashboard Radar warnings feed; if warnings appear there but not at your endpoint, the problem is delivery, not generation.

stripe radar early fraud warning webhook never fired

Use this when

  • You expect early fraud warnings and none arrive at your endpoint.
  • The warnings feed in the Dashboard shows entries your system never saw.
  • You are setting up early fraud warning handling for the first time.

Not for this skill when

  • You are testing in test mode. Early fraud warnings are live-only.
  • No warnings exist in the Dashboard feed either. There is nothing to deliver.
  • Other webhook events are also missing. Fix the endpoint itself first.

Steps

  1. In Dashboard webhook settings, confirm the endpoint subscribes to radar.earlyfraudwarning.created. Verify: the event type is listed on the endpoint.
  2. Check the endpoint's recent delivery log for failures or retries. Verify: recent attempts show 2xx responses.
  3. Open the Radar early fraud warnings feed in the Dashboard. Verify: whether any warnings exist for your recent payments.
  4. If warnings exist in the feed but never reached your endpoint, re-check the signing secret and URL for that endpoint. Verify: a redelivery attempt succeeds.
  5. Document that warnings are rare and network-dependent, so your handler must tolerate long gaps. Verify: your system does not alert on absence alone.

Variant phrasings

radar early fraud warning not received

Shorter phrasing.

stripe early fraud warning webhook missing

Alternate word order.

no radar.earlyfraudwarning.created events

Event-name phrasing.

Compatibility: Stripe Radar; early fraud warnings are live-mode and network-dependent. Webhook deliveries require a reachable HTTPS endpoint.

Why it happens

Early fraud warnings depend on issuers reporting fraud through the card networks, which only some networks and issuers do, and only on live traffic. Teams often wire up the handler, see nothing for weeks, and assume it is broken, when the pipeline is healthy and quiet.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Do not treat a quiet warnings feed as a health signal for Radar overall. It is a sparse, best-effort feed.
  • Endpoint signing secrets rotate. A stale secret silently fails every delivery.
  • Warnings can arrive days after the payment. Your handler must match them to old payments, not just recent ones.
