checkstyle LineLength error blocks PR merge
Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.
Fixes Checkstyle LineLength errors blocking a PR merge by wrapping lines or tuning the module config. Use when Checkstyle reports lines over the limit. Not for other Checkstyle modules.
When it applies
Not specified by the original author.
Instructions
TL;DR
A line exceeds the configured LineLength maximum (commonly 120). Wrap the statement, extract a variable to shorten it, or raise the limit in checkstyle.xml if the team agrees.
Error
[ERROR] src/main/java/com/acme/Order.java:42: Line is longer than 120 characters (found 137).Steps
- Reproduce: run
mvn checkstyle:checkor the Gradle checkstyle task locally. Expected: the same file/line report as the PR. - Wrap the line: break method chains, extract a local variable for a long expression, or split string concatenation. Expected: the line is within the limit.
- For unwrappable lines (long URLs in comments), add a targeted suppression for that line. Expected: the build passes with the suppression documented.
- Re-run the checkstyle task. Expected: BUILD SUCCESSFUL.
When to use
- Checkstyle reports
Line is longer than N charactersand the build fails. - The limit comes from the project's checkstyle.xml.
When not to use
- A different Checkstyle module fails (e.g. UnusedImports) - fix that module instead.
- The file is generated; exclude it in the checkstyle config rather than editing it.
Tool compatibility
- Checkstyle 8.x/10.x via Maven or Gradle plugin.
- Java 8+.
Variant phrasings
LineLength in test sources
Many projects use a separate, higher limit for tests via a second checkstyle execution.
Suppression not working
The suppression filter needs the SuppressionFilter module wired in checkstyle.xml.
Why it happens
LineLength keeps code reviewable in standard-width views and consistent diffs. Checkstyle binds the check to the build, so any violation fails compilation-phase gates.
Edge cases
- Extracting a variable just to shorten a line is fine; extracting nonsense names to game the count is not.
- Comments and annotations count toward the length too.

pull request too large" error from pr-size-labeler: 1200 lines changed
Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.
Fixes pr-size-labeler failing a PR as too large at 1200 lines changed. Use when the size gate blocks review on an oversized diff. Splits the PR into reviewable chunks, excludes generated files and lockfiles from the count, or raises the threshold as a deliberate team decision. Trigger: 'pull request too large' or the size label failing the check.
When it applies
Not specified by the original author.
Instructions
TL;DR
Split the PR - separate refactoring from behavior changes and carve it by feature area so each piece stays under the limit and gets a real review. If the size comes from generated files or lockfiles, exclude those paths in the labeler config so they stop counting. Raising the threshold is legitimate too, but do it as its own deliberate PR, not a drive-by config tweak to unblock yourself.
The error
"pull request too large"
pr-size-labeler: 1200 lines changed exceeds the configured size limitFix it
Read the labeler config (usually
.github/pr-size-labeler.yml) and find the size thresholds plus whetherfail_if_xlis set. Expected: you can see exactly which limit the 1200 lines tripped and whether the labeler fails the check or only labels.Split the PR. Separate pure refactoring from behavior changes first, then split by feature area into stacked PRs, each under the limit. Expected: each smaller PR passes the gate and - more importantly - gets an actual careful review.
Exclude what should never count. Add ignore patterns for generated code, lockfiles, and vendored files to the labeler config. Expected: the counted size drops, often below the limit with no code changes at all.
If the team agrees the limit itself is wrong, raise the threshold in the config in its own PR with the reasoning written down. Expected: a documented policy change the whole team opted into.
Push and confirm the labeler check passes. Expected: green check and a size label that matches the new diff.
Use this when
- pr-size-labeler fails the PR as too large
- You see "pull request too large" in the checks
- An oversized diff (like 1200 lines) is blocked by the size gate
Not for this skill when
- The PR is large because of a bad rebase or an accidental merge of main - fix the branch, not the config
- The failing check is a different bot (codecov, sonar) - those measure different things
- You want the size label without the failure - set the fail option off instead
Variant phrasings
- pr-size-labeler too large
- pull request too large how to fix
- pr size limit exceeded github
- pr-size-labeler failifxl
Why it happens
Huge PRs get rubber-stamp reviews - nobody carefully reads 1200 lines. The labeler enforces small, reviewable diffs as team policy, and the top size bucket is configured to fail the check, not just label it. The 1200-line diff tripped that bucket.
Edge cases
- Generated files and lockfiles inflate counts enormously - exclude them before anything else
- Failing the check vs only applying a label are different settings - know which behavior your config has
- Splitting by commit does not help if the PR is still one big diff - use stacked PRs that each merge independently
- Raising the limit to silence the bot defeats the purpose - treat it as a team decision with tradeoffs, not a quick unblock

rubocop Layout/LineLength: line is too long fails PR CI
Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.
Fixes RuboCop Layout/LineLength failures in PR CI by wrapping the long line or adjusting Max. Use when the PR check reports lines exceeding the configured Max. Not for other RuboCop layout cops.
When it applies
Not specified by the original author.
Instructions
TL;DR
A line exceeds the Max in Layout/LineLength (default 120). Break the line at a method call or string boundary, or raise Max in .rubocop.yml if the project agrees the limit is wrong for the codebase.
Error
app/models/order.rb:14:121: C: Layout/LineLength: Line is too long. [135/120]Steps
- Find the flagged lines: run
rubocop --only Layout/LineLengthlocally. Expected: the same file/line/column report as CI. - Wrap the line: break long method chains one call per line, or split long strings with concatenation or heredocs. Expected: the line is under Max.
- If the line cannot be wrapped sensibly (long URL, regex), add a line-scoped disable with a reason:
# rubocop:disable Layout/LineLength. Expected: the cop skips the line; the reason documents why. - If the limit itself is wrong for the project, set
Max: 140underLayout/LineLengthin.rubocop.yml. Expected:rubocopis green repo-wide without per-line disables.
When to use
- RuboCop reports
Layout/LineLength: Line is too longon PR CI. - The line count
[135/120]exceeds the configured Max.
When not to use
- The failure is a different cop (e.g. Layout/LineLength passes but Style cops fail).
- The project pins line length for generated files; exclude those paths instead.
Tool compatibility
- RuboCop 1.x with Layout/LineLength enabled (default).
- Any Ruby version RuboCop supports.
Variant phrasings
Line is too long in a spec file
Same fix; many teams set a higher Max for spec/ via inherit overrides.
Line is too long in a comment
Rewrap the comment text; URLs can stay long with a scoped disable.
Why it happens
Layout/LineLength enforces a maximum line width for readability and consistent diffs. CI runs RuboCop on the whole repo or the diff, so a single long line fails the gate even when the logic is correct.
Edge cases
- Disabling the cop file-wide hides future long lines; prefer line-scoped disables with reasons.
- String interpolation split across lines still counts the source line length, not the runtime string.
- Editor rulers at the Max value catch these before CI does.
