intel agent hit token budget, comparison failed mid multi-company run

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

This skill fixes intel agents that hit token budgets mid multi-company comparison. Use it when runs die on budget or when planning token spending. It is not for tiny budgets; the fix is per-company estimates, priority ordering, clean stops at the budget, and resuming in the next window.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

Intel agent hit its token budget, comparison failed mid multi-company run

TL;DR

Hitting the token budget mid comparison means the agent spent its inference budget before finishing the company list. The fix is budget-aware planning: estimate cost per company, order by priority, and checkpoint after each. When the budget runs out, the run ends cleanly with partial results instead of dying mid thought.

The error

(run failed)
intel agent hit token budget, comparison failed mid multi-company run; budget exhausted at company 7 of 20

When this helps

  • an agent exhausts its token budget mid run
  • multi-company comparisons die partway
  • planning token budgets
  • building budget-aware agents

When it doesn't

  • the budget is simply too small; raise it instead of optimizing
  • one company eats the budget; fix that company's prompt
  • spending is untracked; measure first

Works with

python 3.8+ with json. Any model with a token budget.

Steps

1. Estimate token cost per company before starting

import json
est = {"per_company_tokens": 8000, "companies": 20, "budget": 200000}
print("estimated:", est["per_company_tokens"] * est["companies"])
print("over budget:", est["per_company_tokens"] * est["companies"] not in range(0, est["budget"]))

Expected: A budget check. Twenty companies at 8k tokens needs 160k; the plan fits or it does not, before the run starts.

2. Order companies by priority within the budget

import json
cos = [("AAPL", 1), ("ZZZ", 5)]
ranked = sorted([(p, t) for t, p in cos])
print("in-budget order:", [t for _, t in ranked])

Expected: A priority order. The budget covers the important companies first.

3. Track spending and stop cleanly at the budget

import json
spent = 140000
budget = 200000
if budget - spent not in range(20000, 10**9):
    print("budget nearly spent: finishing current company, then stopping cleanly")
open("spend.json", "w").write(json.dumps({"spent": spent}))

Expected: A clean stop. The run ends with 7 done, not with company 8 half-written.

4. Resume the remainder in the next budget window

import json
open("remaining.json", "w").write(json.dumps(["C8", "C9"]))
print("remaining companies queued for the next window")

Expected: A remainder queue. The comparison completes across windows, not in one heroic run.

Other ways people phrase this

token budget exhausted multi-company

Estimate per company, prioritize, stop cleanly, resume next window.

agent hit token limit comparison

Budget-aware planning beats hoping the run fits.

comparison failed mid run budget

Checkpoints turn exhaustion into a pause, not a failure.

Why it happens

Token budgets are finite and multi-company comparisons are linear in cost. Agents that start without an estimate discover the limit mid run. Estimating up front, prioritizing, and stopping cleanly turns the budget from a cliff into a plan.

Edge cases

  • Per-company costs vary; measure the expensive ones separately.
  • Summaries from a prior run cut the next run's cost; cache aggressively.
  • A budget that always exhausts is a budget set too low; adjust it.
  • Track spend per company to find the outliers.

license agent misread trial licenses as paid seats, spend inflated

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Fixes license agents that inflate spend by counting trial licenses as paid. Use when reported spend exceeds the actual bill. Not for double-counting bugs.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

Filter license records by SKU and license type, excluding trials. The agent counts every license object, but trials are not spend.

Error

(reported spend $180k; actual bill $120k; difference is trial licenses counted as paid; no error text)

Steps

  1. Confirm the inflation: compare the agent's license list against the billing invoice, SKU by SKU. Expected: trial SKUs identified as the gap.
  2. Find how the API marks trials (SKU ID, license type, or a trial flag depending on the service). Expected: the trial marker known.
  3. Filter them out of the spend calculation; report trials separately if at all. Expected: the filter in place.
  4. Re-run the spend report. Expected: reported spend matches the invoice.

When to use

  • Reported spend exceeds the actual bill
  • The tenant has trial licenses alongside paid ones
  • A new product trial just started

When not to use

  • Spend is inflated by double-counting (a dedup problem)
  • Trials should be counted (then label them, do not mix them into paid spend)
  • The bill itself is wrong (dispute it with the vendor)

Tool compatibility

Microsoft Graph subscribedSkus, Salesforce, and similar license APIs.

Variant phrasings

agent counts expired trials too

Exclude expired licenses as well as trial ones.

trial converted to paid mid-period

Handle the transition: the SKU changes, so re-evaluate each run.

Why it happens

License APIs return all licenses uniformly; nothing marks trials as non-spend except the SKU metadata. Agents that sum without filtering treat trials as purchases.

agent's stripe meter reporting double-counted usage: missing idempotency on usage records

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

Fixes an agent's Stripe meter double-counting usage from missing idempotency on usage records. Covers deterministic idempotency keys, crediting inflated invoices, and monitoring. Not for under-counted usage or fixed-price billing errors.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

Stripe usage records without idempotency keys double-count when the agent retries: two records for one consumption event inflate the invoice. Attach a deterministic idempotency key to every usage record (derived from the event id and billing period), so retries collapse into one record. Then audit recent invoices for inflated usage and credit the difference.

agent's stripe meter reporting double-counted usage: missing idempotency on usage records

Use this when

  • Stripe metered usage is double-counted after agent retries
  • Usage record creation has no idempotency key
  • Invoices show inflated consumption

Not for this skill when

  • Usage is under-counted (a metering pipeline gap, not idempotency)
  • The invoice total is wrong for a fixed-price item
  • You are debugging the upcoming invoice preview

Steps

  1. Confirm the double-count: compare usage records against your application's consumption events for the period. Expected: The duplication is proven.

  2. Derive a deterministic idempotency key per consumption event (event id plus billing period). Expected: Every event maps to exactly one key.

  3. Attach the key to usage record creation and make the agent reuse it on retry. Expected: Retries are idempotent.

  4. Re-run the failed reporting path and confirm a single record per event. Expected: No duplicates are created.

  5. Credit customers for the inflated invoices and add a duplicate-usage monitor. Expected: Past harm is repaired and future harm is caught.

  6. Require idempotency keys on all meter writes in the agent's tool contract. Expected: The class of bug is closed.

Tool compatibility

Stripe usage records API idempotency keys; agent metering pipelines that report consumption to Stripe.

Variant phrasings

stripe usage records duplicate idempotency

The mechanism phrased as a fix.

agent meter double counting stripe

The agent-operations angle.

stripe metered billing duplicate usage records

The billing-symptom phrasing.

Why it happens

Usage records are additive: each one increases the billed quantity, so creating the same record twice bills twice. Agents retry on timeouts and errors as designed, but without an idempotency key Stripe cannot know the retry is a duplicate. A deterministic key turns create into upsert semantics: the same event always produces the same key, and Stripe collapses the retry. The bug is not the retry, which is correct behavior, but the missing key, which makes the retry unsafe. Guardrail: no meter write without a key.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Keys must be deterministic per event, not random per attempt, or retries still duplicate.
  • Backfills need the same key scheme or they will double-count against live reporting.
  • Human review threshold: alert when reported usage jumps beyond a sane multiple of the trailing average.
