saml login error acs url not registered

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

For admins and agents configuring SAML apps. Use when the IdP rejects the ACS URL. Not for signature or certificate errors.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

Fix SAML login error when the ACS URL is not registered

TL;DR

ACS URL not registered means the app sent the SAML response to a URL the IdP does not have on file. Add the exact ACS URL to the IdP's SAML app configuration. Like callback URLs, the match is exact, so copy it from the failing request.

The error

SAML Error: ACS URL not registered
The Assertion Consumer Service URL is not registered for this application.

Use this skill

Agent? Search Vectle for this error:

curl -s "https://vectle.com/api/v1/search?q=saml login error acs url not registered"

Fix it

Step 1: Capture the exact ACS URL from the failing request

Reproduce the login and note the ACS URL the app posts to, from the SAML request or the error detail.

Expected: You have the full URL exactly as sent.

Step 2: Add it to the IdP app configuration

In the IdP's SAML app settings, add the ACS URL to the registered list and save.

Expected: The URL appears in the registered list.

Step 3: Check for scheme and trailing slash drift

Compare the registered entry with the sent URL character by character.

Expected: They match exactly, including https and any trailing slash.

Step 4: Retry the login

Run a fresh SP-initiated login.

Expected: The response is accepted and the user logs in.

Step 5: Register all environments

Repeat for staging and dev ACS URLs if the app runs in multiple environments.

Expected: Every environment's ACS URL is registered; no env falls back to the error.

When this applies

  • SAML logins fail with ACS URL not registered
  • You added a new environment or changed the app's domain
  • Logins work in prod but fail in staging

When it doesn't

  • The ACS URL is registered but signature fails (different check)
  • The error is about the entity ID (that is appnotconfigured territory)
  • The IdP never receives the request (check the SSO URL)

Compatibility

SAML 2.0 generally. IdP-side ACS registration in Okta, Entra, Google, OneLogin.

Variant phrasings

saml acs url mismatch error

Mismatch and not-registered are the same fix: make the registered list match reality exactly.

assertion consumer service url not allowed

Some IdPs call it allowed ACS URLs. Same list, same exact-match rule.

acs url not registered after domain change

Domain changes always require re-registering the ACS URL. Old entries keep working for the old domain only.

Why it happens

The IdP only posts SAML responses to pre-registered ACS URLs, as an anti-phishing control. When the app's ACS URL changes, through a deploy, a domain move, or a path tweak, and nobody updates the IdP config, the IdP refuses the response. Exact string matching makes tiny differences fatal.

Edge cases

  • Apps behind a reverse proxy may advertise an internal ACS URL; register the public one
  • Some apps rotate ACS paths per release; automate the IdP update or it breaks every deploy
  • A single IdP app config shared across tenants needs every tenant's ACS URL registered

If it still fails

  • Capture the exact timestamp, the failing username, and the full error from the IdP system log before changing anything else.
  • Reproduce with a single test user so you are not debugging a crowd.
  • Check the IdP and app status pages; SSO and provisioning outages look exactly like config errors.
  • If it worked before, diff the config against the last known good: certificates, URLs, attribute mappings, and credential expiry.
  • Open a vendor ticket with the timestamp, the request id if there is one, and redacted config. Never send secrets or private keys.

Prevention

  • Track certificate and credential expiry with alerts, not memory.
  • Run a synthetic login per SSO app daily so breakage pages you, not a user.
  • Document attribute mappings where the next admin will actually find them.
  • Test provisioning with a single user before bulk changes.
  • Review app assignments quarterly; stale assignments cause half of provisioning errors.

onelogin saml invalid nameid format error

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

For OneLogin admins and agents debugging SAML logins. Use when the app rejects the NameID format. Not for certificate or ACS URL errors.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

Fix OneLogin SAML invalid NameID format error

TL;DR

Invalid NameID format means the SAML response carries a NameID format the app does not accept, or the value is empty. Open the OneLogin app connector and set the NameID format to what the app expects, usually email address. Then confirm the mapped user field actually has a value for the failing user.

The error

SAML Error: Invalid NameID format
The NameID format in the assertion is not accepted by the service provider.

Use this skill

Agent? Search Vectle for this error:

curl -s "https://vectle.com/api/v1/search?q=onelogin saml invalid nameid format error"

Fix it

Step 1: Confirm what NameID format the app expects

Check the app's SAML docs or its error detail; most expect urn:oasis:names:tc:SAML:1.1:nameid-format:emailAddress.

Expected: You know the exact format string the app wants.

Step 2: Set the NameID format in OneLogin

OneLogin Admin -> Apps -> [app] -> SSO -> set the Name ID format to the expected value and save.

Expected: The connector shows the correct format and saves cleanly.

Step 3: Verify the mapped user field is populated

Check that the field mapped to NameID (usually email) has a value for the failing user in OneLogin.

Expected: The user has a non-empty value in the mapped field.

Step 4: Test with the SAML tracer view

Log in again and inspect the assertion; the NameID element should carry the right Format attribute and a value.

Expected: The assertion shows the expected format and a populated NameID.

Step 5: Re-test login end to end

Start a fresh SP-initiated login for the affected user.

Expected: Login succeeds with no NameID error.

When this applies

  • OneLogin SAML logins fail with invalid NameID format
  • Some users fail while others with the same app succeed
  • You just changed the NameID mapping in OneLogin

When it doesn't

  • All SAML logins fail including signature checks (check the certificate first)
  • The NameID is right but attributes are wrong (that is attribute mapping)
  • You use OneLogin OIDC rather than SAML

Compatibility

OneLogin SAML app connectors. Applies to the standard OneLogin SAML Test and vendor connectors.

Variant phrasings

onelogin saml nameid format invalid

Same error. The fix is always format plus a populated mapped value.

nameid format not supported onelogin

The app rejects the format OneLogin sends. Match it to the app's documented expectation.

empty nameid onelogin saml error

When the mapped field is blank for a user, the assertion carries an empty NameID and the app rejects it as invalid.

Why it happens

The NameID is the user identifier inside the SAML assertion, and it carries a format label telling the app how to read it. If OneLogin sends persistent but the app expects emailAddress, or sends an empty value because the mapped field is blank, the app rejects the assertion. It is a contract mismatch between the two sides, not a crypto problem.

Edge cases

  • Users without an email in OneLogin fail while everyone else passes; backfill the field
  • Changing the NameID format can break already-linked accounts that were matched on the old value
  • Test connectors default to unspecified format; vendor apps almost never accept that

  • Document attribute mappings where the next admin will actually find them.
  • Test provisioning with a single user before bulk changes.

zendesk "saml sso login loop" agents redirected after auth

  • Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.

A guide to fixing Zendesk SAML SSO login loops that redirect agents after authentication, in the business-apis-integrations category: ACS URL matching, NameID and email mapping, certificate expiry, and IdP versus SP initiated flows. Use when agents authenticate successfully then bounce back to login, or when SSO logins loop endlessly. Not for password logins, end-user SSO, or IdP setup basics.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

A SAML login loop means authentication succeeds at the identity provider but Zendesk rejects the session and sends the agent back, usually because the NameID or email in the assertion does not match a Zendesk user, or the ACS URL the IdP posts to is wrong. Compare the assertion Zendesk receives against the user record field by field. The loop is a mismatch, not a mystery.

The query

zendesk "saml sso login loop" agents redirected after auth

Use this when

  • Agents authenticate at the IdP then return to the login page
  • SSO logins loop without an error message
  • SSO worked and broke after a config change
  • You are debugging Zendesk agent SSO

Not for

  • Password-based agent logins
  • End-user (help center) SSO
  • Setting up an IdP from scratch
  • Social login configuration

Steps

1. Capture the SAML assertion Zendesk receives

Use the IdP's sign-in logs or a SAML tracer to capture the assertion. Check the NameID format and value, the email attribute, and the audience and recipient fields. The loop hides in one of these.

Expected output: the full assertion with NameID, email, audience, and recipient visible.

2. Match the NameID to the Zendesk user

Zendesk matches the assertion to a user by the configured identifier, usually email. If the NameID is a persistent opaque id but Zendesk expects email, no user matches and the login bounces. Align the NameID format with what Zendesk is configured to match on.

Expected output: NameID format aligned with the Zendesk user-matching field.

3. Verify the ACS URL and entity ID

The IdP must post the response to Zendesk's exact ACS URL, and the entity ID must match. A trailing slash or http versus https difference breaks the handshake silently. Copy both values from Zendesk's SSO settings into the IdP.

Expected output: ACS URL and entity ID byte-identical on both sides.

4. Check the signing certificate

An expired or rotated IdP certificate makes Zendesk reject the assertion. Confirm the certificate in Zendesk matches the IdP's current signing certificate, and note the expiry date.

Expected output: current valid certificate installed on both sides.

5. Test IdP-initiated versus SP-initiated separately

One flow may work while the other loops. Test both, and standardize on the working one while you fix the other. RelayState handling differs between the flows and is a common loop source.

Expected output: both flows tested, working flow identified.

Template: the checklist

Zendesk SAML login loop:
[ ] Assertion captured: NameID, email, audience, recipient checked
[ ] NameID format matches Zendesk user-matching configuration
[ ] ACS URL and entity ID byte-identical on both sides
[ ] Signing certificate current and matching
[ ] IdP-initiated and SP-initiated flows tested separately

Variant phrasings

zendesk sso keeps redirecting to login

Steps 1 and 2. Capture the assertion, match the user.

saml assertion rejected zendesk

Steps 3 and 4. ACS URL and certificate.

zendesk sso worked then broke

Step 4 first. Certificate rotation is the usual suspect.

Why it happens

SAML is a multi-party handshake where every field must agree: IdP configuration, Zendesk configuration, and the user record. A change on any side (cert rotation, email change, IdP upgrade) breaks the agreement, and the failure mode is a redirect loop rather than an error page because each side thinks the other should proceed.

Edge cases

  • Email changes: a user whose email changed at the IdP no longer matches their Zendesk record. Update one side.
  • Multiple Zendesk instances: the IdP app must target the right instance's ACS URL. Staging and production configs get swapped.
  • Clock skew: assertions have a validity window. Severe skew between IdP and Zendesk rejects valid assertions.
  • Just-in-time provisioning: if enabled, a mismatch creates a new user instead of looping. Decide which behavior you want.
