bright data 401 authentication failed username password

Fixes Bright Data 401 authentication failed: credential placement, zone config, and password rotation. Use when the proxy or API rejects the username and password. Not for 407 proxy auth from a different proxy or 402 credit errors.

TL;DR

The 401 means Bright Data did not accept the credential pair. Check that the username includes the zone and any required suffixes exactly as the dashboard shows it, that the password is current, and that you are sending both in the right place (proxy auth vs API header). Copy the credentials fresh from the dashboard rather than trusting stored copies.

bright data 401 authentication failed username password

Use this when

  • Proxy requests fail with 401 auth errors.
  • The credentials worked before and stopped.
  • You are setting up a new zone.

Not for this skill when

  • The error is 402. That is credits.
  • A different proxy 407s. That is that proxy's auth, not Bright Data's.

Steps

  1. Copy the username and password fresh from the Bright Data dashboard, including the full zone suffix on the username. Verify: the strings match character for character.
  2. Check where the credentials go: proxy username/password for proxy endpoints, API key header for the API. Verify: each credential is in its documented place.
  3. Test with curl using the fresh credentials before touching code. Verify: curl authenticates, isolating the problem to client wiring.
  4. If the password was rotated, update every stored copy: env files, CI secrets, and teammate configs. Verify: no stale copies remain.
  5. Confirm the zone is active and the account is in good standing. Verify: the dashboard shows the zone enabled.

Variant phrasings

brightdata 401 unauthorized

The short search, same credential-placement fix.

bright data proxy auth failed

Proxy phrasing, points at step 2.

bright data wrong username password

Symptom phrasing, lands on the fresh-copy step.

Compatibility: Bright Data proxy and API. Usernames carry zone suffixes that are easy to truncate.

Why it happens

Bright Data usernames are structured (customer ID, zone, and options encoded in the string), so a truncated or hand-typed username is simply a different identity. Passwords rotate, dashboards get copied wrong, and env files go stale. The 401 is the gateway saying the pair does not match anything it knows.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Never commit these credentials. Environment variables or a secrets manager.
  • A 401 that starts suddenly on working credentials usually means a rotation or a billing hold. Check both.
  • Special characters in passwords break naive URL embedding. Send them as proper proxy-auth fields, not pasted into a URL.
  • Log authentication attempts without the secret values. The username alone is enough to debug.
