## TL;DR

You used a method name dbt does not know, or misspelled a real one. Check the method against the real list (fqn, tag, source, path, config, etc.), fix the spelling, and quote the selector so the shell does not mangle it.

## Error

```text
dbt list error: selector method not recognized
```

## Steps

1. Copy the method name from the error and compare it to dbt's selector methods: fqn, tag, group, source, path, file, package, config, test_name, test_type, resource_type, state, result, source_status, exposure, metric, saved_query, semantic_model.
   Expected: You spot the typo or the invented method, e.g. model: instead of a real method.

2. Fix the selector, e.g. --select tag:nightly instead of --select tags:nightly, and wrap the whole selector in single quotes.
   Expected: The selector parses.

3. Run dbt list --select 'your_fixed_selector' to verify it matches the nodes you expect.
   Expected: dbt list prints the intended models, no method error.

4. If you need set logic, use the documented operators: comma for union, space for intersection, --exclude for difference.
   Expected: Complex selectors behave as documented.

## When to use

- dbt list, run, test, or build fails with selector method not recognized
- a selector copied from a blog post that used a wrong method name
- after a dbt upgrade where a method was renamed

## When not to use

- the selector runs but selects nothing (that is a matching problem, check tag values)
- the error is about graph operators like + (that is syntax around a valid method)
- you are using dbt Cloud's job selector UI, which does not take raw methods

## Tool compatibility

- dbt-core selector syntax stable since 1.0; some methods added later (group, saved_query)
- dbt ls --select is the safe way to test selectors without running anything
- dbt Cloud job commands accept the same selector strings

## Variant phrasings

### selector method not recognized: state
state:modified needs --state pointing at a prior artifacts directory. The method exists; the error means the flag combo is wrong, add --state path/to/artifacts.

### method not recognized after upgrade
Check the changelog; e.g. very old method names were removed. Use the current list above.

## Why it happens

dbt parses the method name before the colon strictly, and anything it does not know is an error rather than a silent no-match. Typos (tag vs tags), singular/plural mixups, and invented methods are the usual culprits.

## Edge cases

- Shell quoting: --select tag:nightly,path:models/marts needs quotes or the shell splits on special chars.
- config: selectors need the full config path like config.materialized:table; partial paths do not match.
