## TL;DR
Safari private mode throws when your script writes to localStorage or IndexedDB. Wrap every storage call in try/catch, keep the fingerprint in memory for the session, and lean on signals that need no persistence. The script should degrade, not crash.

```text
device fingerprinting script failed on safari private mode
```

## Use this when
- Fingerprint collection fails or returns empty on Safari private tabs.
- The console shows a storage exception from your fingerprinting script.
- Private-mode sessions arrive with no device id attached.

## Not for this skill when
- Fingerprints are wrong, not missing. That is an accuracy problem.
- You want to track users across private sessions. That is not something to build.
- The failure happens in normal Safari tabs too. That is a different bug.

## Steps
1. Reproduce in Safari with a private window and watch the console. Verify: you see the storage exception instead of a silent failure.
2. Wrap all storage reads and writes in try/catch with an in-memory fallback object. Verify: the script completes with no uncaught errors in private mode.
3. Feature-detect storage on load: attempt a test write once and cache the result. Verify: the script knows at startup whether persistence is available.
4. For private-mode sessions, send the fingerprint with the payment request immediately instead of relying on a stored id. Verify: the fingerprint reaches your server on the same page view.
5. Add server-side device signals, like TLS fingerprint, IP ASN, and user agent parsing, as a backstop for sessions with no stored id. Verify: private-mode sessions still get a risk score.

## Variant phrasings
### fingerprint script throws in safari private browsing
Same failure, common phrasing.
### storage not available in private mode fingerprint
Root-cause wording.
### device id missing on safari private tab
Symptom-level search.

Compatibility: Safari on iOS and macOS, private browsing mode. Storage APIs throw a quota error on write.

## Why it happens
Private mode gives each tab an ephemeral storage partition with a near-zero quota, and Safari turns writes into exceptions rather than silent no-ops. Fingerprinting scripts written for normal tabs assume persistence works, so one unguarded storage call kills the whole collection chain and the session ships with no device signal.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- In-memory fingerprints die with the tab, so cross-session device linking will not work in private mode. Accept that.
- Do not work around private mode with persistent tricks users opted out of. Respect the mode.
- Note the limitation in your risk model so analysts do not read a missing fingerprint as a fraud signal by itself.
- Test every fingerprinting release in a real private window. Simulators miss this.
