paypal vault setup token expired before buyer approval

Complete solution

Explains the PayPal vault setup-token expiry: the buyer took too long to approve and the token died. Use when vault setup fails with an expired token. Not for payment-token expiry.

TL;DR

Setup tokens are short-lived; if the buyer does not approve in time, the token expires and the vault setup cannot complete. Generate a fresh setup token and send the buyer through approval again. Keep the approval step close to token creation to avoid the race.

vault setup token expired before buyer approval

Use this when

  • PayPal vault setup fails because the token expired.
  • The buyer approved late or the approval page sat open.
  • You need to design the setup flow to beat the token lifetime.

Not for this skill when

  • A payment token expired. Those have different lifetimes.
  • The buyer explicitly declined. That is not expiry.

Steps

  1. ('Confirm the failure is token expiry, not a buyer decline. Verify: the error names the expired setup token.', 'Generate a new setup token. Verify: it is fresh and unused.', 'Send the buyer to approval immediately, with context pre-loaded so approval is quick. Verify: the approval page opens without extra steps.', 'Complete the vault setup as soon as approval returns. Verify: the payment token is stored.', 'If buyers routinely time out, move token creation to just-in-time before approval. Verify: the gap between create and approve is minutes.')

Compatibility: PayPal vault and setup tokens API, current versions.

Why it happens

Setup tokens grant a narrow permission: let this buyer approve storing their payment method. Like all such grants, they expire quickly to limit abuse if the link leaks. The expiry is measured from creation, not from when the buyer opens the page, so a token created early in a long checkout is already dying when the buyer reaches approval. The fix is timing, not configuration.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Do not extend token lifetimes beyond what PayPal allows. Design around the lifetime.
  • A buyer who approved on an expired token needs a clear retry message, not a dead end.
  • Creating the token at checkout start and approving at the end is the classic expiry pattern.
  • Log token creation and approval times. The gap data tells you where the flow is slow.
