Solution skill

E: dpkg failed with interrupted state you must manually run dpkg --configure -a

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes the dpkg interrupted-state error E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run dpkg --configure -a, left behind when a package configure step was killed by a power loss, SSH drop, or an agent timeout mid-upgrade. Use when every apt command refuses to run with this message. Not for routine unmet-dependency errors.

TL;DR

This message means a previous dpkg run died mid-configure, leaving packages unpacked but not configured and a lock-state dpkg refuses to build on. Run dpkg --configure -a in a session that will not drop (console, tmux, or a proper service), answer any package prompts, repair with apt --fix-broken install if it asks, and then continue the original upgrade.

E: dpkg failed with interrupted state you must manually run dpkg --configure -a

Use this when

  • Every apt command prints E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run dpkg --configure -a to correct the problem.
  • The host lost power, rebooted, or had its SSH session killed during an upgrade.
  • An automation run timed out while apt was configuring packages.

Not for this skill when

  • apt works but reports unmet dependencies for one package. That is a consistency problem, not an interrupted run.
  • Another apt process is genuinely running right now. Wait for it instead of configuring in parallel.

Steps

  1. Confirm no apt or dpkg process is currently running with ps. Verify: no live package manager process exists
  2. Run dpkg --configure -a in a persistent session and watch for package prompts (for example service restarts or config file questions). Verify: each pending package reaches a configured state or reports a specific error
  3. If it stops on one package, read that package configure error, fix its cause (often a failed service start or a full disk), and rerun. Verify: the named package configures on the next pass
  4. Run apt --fix-broken install if dpkg instructs, then dpkg --audit. Verify: audit output is empty
  5. Resume the interrupted upgrade with apt upgrade. Verify: the upgrade completes and a reboot, if requested, happens cleanly

Variant phrasings

dpkg was interrupted run dpkg configure -a

The message-first phrasing.

apt locked after power loss mid upgrade

The cause-first phrasing.

half configured packages after ssh dropped apt

The automation-context phrasing.

Compatibility: Compatibility: All Debian and Ubuntu releases with dpkg; behavior identical in containers and VMs.

Why it happens

dpkg unpacks and configures packages in separate phases, and it records progress in its status database. If the process dies between phases, the database says work is in flight, so dpkg blocks new operations rather than risk interleaving two transactions. The configure -a run simply resumes the recorded work, which is why it must run to completion without another interruption.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Running upgrades over a plain SSH session without tmux or screen is how fleets manufacture this error; patch windows should use a persistent session or a configuration tool.
  • If the configure step hangs on a service that cannot start in a container or chroot, that service error is the real blocker to fix.
  • A full disk can both cause the interruption and block the recovery; check space before rerunning.
