## TL;DR
Billing exports stop for three usual reasons: the export was disabled, the dataset permissions broke, or a schema change broke your scheduled query that reads the export. Re-enable the export, fix the query against the new schema, and confirm fresh partitions are landing.

## Use this when
- The billing export dataset has no partitions newer than some date.
- A scheduled query or dashboard on top of the export starts failing.
- Cost reports go stale while the console still shows current spend.

## Not for this skill when
- The export works but your query is slow or expensive. That is a query-tuning problem.
- You need the export set up for the first time. Follow the initial setup flow.

## Steps
1. Check the export config in Billing settings: confirm the export is still enabled and pointed at the right project and dataset. Verify: the toggle is on and the destination matches.
2. Check dataset permissions: the billing service account needs write access to the dataset. Verify: recent write activity or a successful permission check.
3. Look at the newest partition date versus today. Verify: you know exactly when the data stopped.
4. If a scheduled query broke, diff its expected schema against the export's current schema; Google occasionally adds or renames fields. Verify: the query references only fields that exist now.
5. Fix the query, re-run it, and watch for the next daily partition. Verify: a fresh partition lands within 24 hours.

### Schema-change variant
When fields are renamed, update the query's column list rather than selecting star. Verify: the query succeeds against the new schema.

Compatibility: GCP billing export to BigQuery, standard and detailed usage cost exports.

## Why it happens
The export is a daily batch job with its own permissions and config, separate from your queries. Any break in that chain (disabled export, revoked write access, schema drift under your queries) silently stops the data while everything else keeps working.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- The export does not backfill long gaps reliably. Fix promptly or accept the hole.
- Dataset location matters; the export writes to the dataset's region and will not cross regions.
- Multiple billing accounts need separate exports; one export does not cover them all.
- Monitor the export with a scheduled check on partition freshness so the next break pages you.
