Solution skill

typedoc "No entry points provided" error

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes TypeDoc refusing to run with no entry points. The skill shows how to point TypeDoc at the package entry file, wire entryPointStrategy for packages versus monorepos, and confirm the resolved entry list. It covers CLI flags and typedoc.json equivalents.

TL;DR

Give TypeDoc an entry point: pass the entry file on the CLI or set entryPoints in typedoc.json. For monorepos use the packages strategy; for single packages use resolve. Confirm the entry list in the log before the conversion runs.

The exact error

No entry points provided

Steps

  1. Check how TypeDoc was invoked Look at the npm script or CI step. If no file argument and no entryPoints key exist, that is the bug. Success check: You can see the missing entry point in the invocation.

  2. Set the entry point Add entryPoints: ["src/index.ts"] to typedoc.json, or pass the file on the CLI. Use the package's real public entry, not an internal module. Success check: The config names an existing entry file.

  3. Pick the right strategy For monorepos, set entryPointStrategy to packages and point at the workspace root. For single packages, resolve or expand work. Success check: The strategy matches the repo layout.

  4. Verify the resolved entries Run typedoc with --logLevel Verbose and confirm the entry list is non-empty before conversion starts. Success check: The log lists the resolved entry points and conversion proceeds.

When to use

  • Use when TypeDoc exits immediately complaining about entry points.
  • Use when an agent generates API docs for a TypeScript repo and needs the entry wiring right.

When not to use

  • Not for 'failed to resolve' import errors during conversion (entry was found, imports are broken).
  • Not for empty output with valid entries (that is an exclusion or visibility filter problem).

Why it happens

TypeDoc needs at least one entry point to know where the public API surface starts. Package.json main/module fields are not consulted unless the strategy says so, so a bare typedoc invocation in a repo root finds nothing.

Edge cases

The packages strategy reads workspace globs; a wrong glob silently yields zero entries, which surfaces as this same error. Verbose logging is the fastest way to see what TypeDoc resolved.
