Solution skill
how to tell a hard block from a retryable signup failure
Complete solution
Distinguishes hard blocks from retryable signup failures by reading status codes, error text, and persistence across retries. Use when a signup fails and you must decide whether to retry, wait, or abandon the venue. Triggers: 'hard block vs retryable', 'signup failure retry or abandon', 'is this signup blocked'. Not for: evading a hard block with new IPs or accounts.
TL;DR
Read the failure before reacting: 429s, timeouts, and transient 5xx errors are retryable with backoff, while 403s with policy wording, explicit "banned" or "not allowed" messages, and failures that persist across time and networks are hard blocks. Retry the first kind with patience; log and abandon the second kind.
how to tell a hard block from a retryable signup failureUse this when
- A signup attempt fails and you need a next action
- Triaging a batch of failed signups
- Writing retry logic for signup automation
Not for this skill when
- The error is clearly a bug in your own script (fix the script)
- You have already classified this venue (trust the log)
- You are tempted to rotate IPs to beat a block (do not)
Steps
- Capture the full failure. Status code, response body or page text, and timestamp. Paraphrasing loses the classification signal. Expected: the raw evidence saved.
- Check the status code first. 429 means slow down and retry; 5xx often means try later; 403 with policy text leans hard block; 200 with an inline error needs the message read. Expected: a preliminary classification.
quick classifier:
429, 503, timeout -> retryable, back off
403 + policy wording -> likely hard block
explicit ban language -> hard block
vague error, first time -> unknown, test once more- Run one careful retest after a delay. Same request, minutes later. If a 429 clears, it was rate limiting; if a 403 persists unchanged, it is a block. Expected: the retest confirms or overturns the classification.
- Test persistence signals. Hard blocks stay identical across time; retryable failures vary. Do not escalate to new IPs or accounts to "check", that is evasion testing. Expected: a verdict from at most two attempts.
- Log the verdict per venue: retryable with the backoff that worked, or hard block with the evidence. Expected: no future run re-tests a known hard block.
Variant phrasings
is this signup failure permanent
If the 403 or ban wording persists across a delayed retest, treat it as permanent and log it.
retry or abandon a failed signup
429s and 5xx get patient retries; policy-worded 403s and explicit bans get logged and abandoned.
signup blocked vs rate limited
Rate limits say slow down and clear on retry; blocks state a policy and do not clear.
Why it happens
Sites layer two different systems: rate limiting (protect the servers, temporary) and abuse prevention (protect the community, persistent). They deliberately return different signals, and reading those signals correctly is the difference between a signup that succeeds on retry and an account flagged for probing.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Some sites return 200 with a JavaScript-rendered error; read the rendered text, not just the code.
- A block can look retryable if you only test once during a deploy window; the delayed retest matters.
- Never "test" a suspected block from a different IP; that converts a block into an evasion incident.
- Log the exact error text; the same venue can rate-limit you one day and block you the next.
