## TL;DR
Value leaks at renewal when the approval workflow that should catch below-floor pricing never fires: the quote routes around it, the discount field the rule watches is not the one reps edit, or auto-renew terms overwrite the negotiated price. Rebuild one decreased renewal's approval trail and compare it to the workflow as configured.

```text
contract value decreased at renewal: approval workflow failed
```

## Use this when
- Renewed contract values are lower than prior term without documented negotiation
- Discount or concession approvals are missing from the deal record
- A CPQ, pricing, or approval-tool change shipped recently

## Not for this skill when
- The decreases match a deliberate retention-discount program
- Customers shrank usage and the value honestly follows consumption

## Steps
1. Take three decreased renewals and pull their full quote and approval history. Verify: each decrease's path through (or around) approval is reconstructed
2. Compare the approval workflow's trigger fields and thresholds against the fields actually used on those quotes. Verify: the rule's blind spot (wrong field, wrong object, skipped stage) is found
3. Check auto-renewal and self-serve downgrade paths for prices that bypass approval entirely. Verify: any bypass path is enumerated
4. Close the blind spot, re-route the bypass paths through approval, and re-test with a below-floor quote. Verify: the test quote is stopped for approval as designed
5. Report the value impact of the leak window to leadership with the affected renewal list. Verify: the business sees the size of the hole that was closed

### quote lost value at renewal

Compatibility: Compatibility: CPQ and approval workflows (Salesforce CPQ, DealHub, HubSpot approvals), current versions.

## Why it happens
Approval workflows guard the paths their authors imagined. Value leaks through the unimagined paths: a different discount field, a clone of an old quote, a self-serve flow added later. Reconstructing real decreased deals finds the actual paths instead of auditing the imagined ones.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Some decreases are true-downsells the customer demanded with leverage. Separate negotiated losses from unapproved ones before reporting a leak size.
- Approval friction pushes reps to invent new bypasses. Fix the blind spot and keep the legitimate path fast.
- Historical unapproved decreases usually cannot be re-priced mid-term. The recovery is at next renewal, armed with the paper trail.
