## TL;DR

SmartScan rejects the image because it is too blurry, dark, skewed, or cropped for OCR. Lay the receipt flat on a dark surface, photograph it with even lighting and all four corners in frame, then delete the failed attachment and re-upload. If the paper is faded thermal print, enter the expense manually and attach the photo as documentation.

## Error

```text
Expensify: receipt image unreadable  -  please retake the photo
```

## Steps

1. Open the expense in Expensify and view the attached image at full size. Expected: you can see whether the image is blurry, shadowed, skewed, or cut off.
2. Lay the receipt flat on a dark, non-reflective surface and photograph it under even light with all four corners inside the frame. Expected: the new photo shows the full receipt with the total line sharp and legible.
3. Delete the failed attachment from the expense and upload the new photo. Expected: the attachment uploads and SmartScan starts processing.
4. Wait for SmartScan to finish (usually under a minute), then confirm merchant, date, and total. Expected: the expense populates with the extracted values and no unreadable-image error.
5. If SmartScan still fails on faded thermal paper, enter merchant, date, and total manually and keep the photo attached. Expected: the expense saves in a manually-entered state and submits without the error.

## When to use

- Expensify shows "receipt image unreadable" or asks you to retake the photo after upload.
- SmartScan spins and then fails on a phone-camera receipt photo.
- A crumpled or curled receipt scans repeatedly with no extracted data.

## When not to use

- The image is readable but SmartScan pulls the wrong merchant or total (that is an extraction miss, not an unreadable image).
- The receipt is a PDF or emailed file that fails text extraction.
- The error mentions a policy violation or a missing approver instead.

## Tool compatibility

Expensify web and mobile apps (current 2026 releases). Applies to SmartScan on phone photos and uploaded images.

### Variant phrasings

### "Expensify unable to read receipt" after scanning

Same failure in older wording: the image is too low quality for OCR. Retake with flat, even lighting.

### "please retake the photo" loop in the mobile app

The app keeps asking for a new photo even though one looks fine. The preview compresses; check the full-size image for blur at the total line and re-shoot with tap-to-focus there.

### unreadable receipt on a long gas-station or hotel folio

Long receipts curl and skew. Tape the ends down flat, shoot in two overlapping photos if needed, and attach both to one expense.

## Why it happens

OCR needs crisp, high-contrast text with straight lines. Phone photos add motion blur, shadows from overhead light, and perspective skew when shot at an angle. Thermal receipts fade over weeks, leaving gray text on gray paper that falls below the contrast threshold. SmartScan rejects the image early rather than guessing, which is why the error tells you to retake instead of correcting fields.
