## TL;DR

Retry the mount with a fresh auth flow and mount only the folders you need instead of the whole shared drive.
Large shared drives enumerate thousands of files at mount time, and the FUSE mount times out before the listing completes.
Authenticate cleanly, then access specific shared-drive paths rather than mounting everything.

```text
colab drive mount failed: timeout mounting a large shared drive
```

## Use this when

- drive.mount times out on a shared drive but works on a personal drive
- The mount hangs for minutes then fails with a timeout error
- The shared drive has tens of thousands of files

## Not for this skill when

- Drive never mounts even for a personal drive - that is an auth problem
- The session expired at 12 hours - that is item 117
- Cells will not execute - that is item 118

## Steps

1. Start from a clean auth state: restart the runtime and run the mount cell fresh.
   Expected: the auth prompt appears instead of reusing a stale session.

2. Complete the OAuth flow in the popup and paste the code if prompted.
   Expected: the mount command proceeds past authentication.

3. If the full mount still times out, mount and then immediately navigate to the specific shared-drive folder path instead of listing the root.
   Expected: operations on the targeted path succeed without enumerating everything.

4. Reduce enumeration cost: avoid recursive listings over the shared drive root; use direct paths.
   Expected: file access is fast once you stop walking the whole tree.

5. For repeated heavy access, copy the needed files to local /content at session start and work there.
   Expected: the notebook no longer depends on FUSE latency mid-run.

## Variant phrasings

### colab drive mount timeout shared drive

Same fix applies: see the Steps section above.

### colab mount large shared drive fails

Same fix applies: see the Steps section above.

### drive.mount hangs timeout colab

Same fix applies: see the Steps section above.

## Why it happens

Colab's Drive integration is a FUSE mount that enumerates the drive namespace when you browse it. Shared drives with huge file counts make that enumeration slow, and the mount handshake has a timeout that fires before the listing finishes. Personal drives are usually smaller, which is why they mount fine while the shared drive fails. Targeted paths and local copies sidestep the enumeration cost entirely instead of fighting the timeout.

## Edge cases / pitfalls

- The 12-hour session limit still applies; local /content copies vanish on recycle - keep originals on Drive.
- Auth codes expire quickly; complete the flow promptly or restart it.
- Service-account style access is not available in consumer Colab; the OAuth popup is the only path.
