**Reproduce with the exact message that stayed.** Open the message that should have been archived and note its real sender address, subject words, and any list or mailing headers it carries. Expected: you have the ground truth values the filter must match.

**Run the filter criteria as a search.** In filter settings, choose show search options for that filter and run the search it defines. Success check: the problem message appears in the results; if it does not, the criteria are the bug.

**Fix the sender match.** A filter written for a display name or a single address misses mail sent from a domain or a plus addressed variant. Change the From field to the domain or the exact sending address seen in step 1. Expected: the search in step 2 now includes the problem message.

**Check for an overriding rule or setting.** Look for another filter that marks matching mail as important or never sends it to spam, and check whether the inbox type surfaces priority or categorized mail regardless of the archive action. Success check: no second rule explains the message staying visible.

**Confirm the action boxes on the filter.** Skip Inbox must be checked on this filter itself; a filter that only adds a label does not archive. Expected: Skip Inbox and the label action are both set, then save.

**Apply to matching conversations and test with new mail.** Apply the corrected filter to existing matching conversations to clear the backlog, then wait for or trigger one new matching message. Success check: the new message carries the label and does not sit in the inbox.
