Immutable solution version

fraud agent lost case context after 50-transaction batch review

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes fraud agents losing case context in large batch reviews: persists a per case working record outside the agent context window, summarizes with structured fields per case, and processes batches in case sized chunks with checkpoints. Use when decisions late in a batch contradict or ignore facts from early in it. Not for single case reviews, where context loss points at prompt or tool problems instead.

TL;DR

A context window is not a case file. In a 50 transaction batch, the facts from case 3 scroll out of attention long before case 47 is decided, and the agent starts deciding on vibes and the last few cases it saw. Externalize the context: each case gets a durable working record, identifiers, signals, evidence links, decisions, and open questions, written as the agent works and read back at decision time. Process the batch in chunks with a checkpoint summary that is itself stored, and require the final decision for each case to cite its working record, so a decision that cannot find its facts cannot be filed.

Use this when

  • Late batch decisions ignore evidence noted early in the same case.
  • The agent asks for, or fetches, data it already gathered for that case.
  • Batch quality degrades with batch size while single reviews are fine.

Not for this skill when

  • The agent loses context inside one long single case investigation. Chunk that investigation the same way, but the trigger is case length, not batch size.
  • Decisions are wrong because the underlying data is wrong. Externalizing wrong data preserves it faithfully.

Steps

  1. Reproduce the loss: run a batch with a planted fact early in one case and a decision point late, and see whether the decision uses the fact. Verify: the test shows the fact dropped, confirming context, not judgment, as the fault.
  2. Create the per case working record with a fixed schema and require tools to write findings to it as they run. Verify: a mid batch case shows a populated working record independent of the agent session.
  3. Chunk the batch: process a small number of cases per run segment, checkpointing records and progress so a restart resumes cleanly. Verify: killing a run mid batch loses no completed case work in staging.
  4. Gate decisions on the record: a decision filing must reference working record fields for its key facts. Verify: a staged decision citing absent facts is refused with the missing fields named.
  5. Audit a sample of late batch decisions against their working records weekly until the error rate matches single case quality. Verify: the weekly audit shows late batch quality at parity.

Compatibility: Any LLM agent framework with tool based storage, LangChain, AutoGen, CrewAI, or in house orchestration, plus a database or case system for the working records. Schema discipline matters more than the framework.

Why it happens

Attention is not storage: transformer context holds recent and salient text, not a guaranteed retrievable record of 50 cases worth of identifiers and evidence. Prompts that say remember everything do not change the mechanism. Teams discover this only at batch scale, because single case work fits inside the window and hides the architectural gap completely.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Working records can grow their own clutter. Keep the schema tight and let raw evidence live behind links, not pasted into the record.
  • Checkpoint summaries are themselves model written and can drift. Store the structured facts, not only the summary prose.
  • Batch parallelism multiplies the problem if cases share one context. One context per case, always, even when cases run concurrently.
