## TL;DR
One step in the sequence outputs something the next step's input schema rejects. Print each step's input and output schema, find the boundary where they disagree, and insert a small transform (usually a RunnableLambda) that reshapes the data. The chain itself is fine; the handoff between two steps is not.

## Error
```text
input schema mismatch
```
(raised as a pydantic validation error when a step's output fails the next step's input schema)

## Steps

1. Print the input and output schema of every step to find the bad boundary:
```python
for i, step in enumerate(chain.steps):
    print(i, step.input_schema.schema())
    print(i, step.output_schema.schema())
```
Expected output: a schema per step. The mismatch sits at the boundary where step N's output keys or types differ from step N+1's input keys or types.

2. Confirm the failing boundary with a minimal input:
```python
partial = chain.steps[0].invoke({"question": "test"})
print(type(partial), partial)
```
Expected output: the actual value the first step produces. Compare it against the second step's expected input shape from step 1.

3. Insert a transform step at the boundary that reshapes the data URIs
```python
from langchain_core.runnables import RunnableLambda
def reshape(out):
    return {"context": out["text"], "question": out["question"]}
chain = step1 | RunnableLambda(reshape) | step2
```
Expected output: the transform's output keys and types match step2's input schema exactly.

4. Re-run the full sequence and confirm it validates end to end:
```python
result = chain.invoke({"question": "what is the refund policy"})
```
Expected output: a result with no validation error. If it still fails, repeat step 1; there may be a second bad boundary further down.

## When to use
- A RunnableSequence or LCEL chain raises a validation or schema error at a step boundary
- You composed steps from different sources (a retriever plus a custom prompt chain)
- The chain worked before a step's output shape changed

## When not to use
- The error is inside a single step's logic (fix the step, not the handoff)
- The chain fails on the first step's input (that is your input, not a mismatch)
- You are using plain functions, not runnables (no schemas are enforced there)

## Variant phrasings

### pydantic ValidationError inside a chain step
Same boundary problem, surfaced by pydantic directly. The schema print in step 1 still finds it.

### chain worked with .invoke but fails with .batch
Batch mode validates each input against the schema. One bad item in the batch fails the boundary; check the batch inputs, not the chain.

## Why it happens
LCEL validates data at every step boundary against the declared input and output schemas. Steps built independently often disagree on key names, nesting, or types (a string where a list of documents is expected is the classic). The validation is doing its job; the two steps were never shaped to fit.

## Edge cases
- RunnableLambda infers schemas from type hints; untyped lambdas get loose schemas that can hide the next mismatch. Add hints.
- Prompt templates expect specific input variables; a transform that renames a key the prompt needs will fail at the prompt, not the boundary.
- Streaming can surface the mismatch later in the stream; the boundary is the same, only the timing differs.
