## TL;DR
You cannot transfer more than the charge collected. Reduce transfer_data amount to at most the charge amount minus your platform fee, or switch to separate charges and transfers if you need flexible splits. The charge amount is the ceiling.

```text
transfer_data.amount exceeds the charge
```

## Use this when
- Creating a marketplace charge fails because transfer_data amount exceeds the charge.
- Your platform fee math leaves more for the seller than the customer paid.
- You need to decide between destination charges and separate charges and transfers.

## Not for this skill when
- The transfer failed after creation. That is a balance or account problem, not an amount problem.
- You are reversing a transfer. Reversals have their own limits.

## Steps
1. ('Read the charge amount and your transfer_data amount. Verify: transfer exceeds charge, confirming the error.', 'Recompute the split: seller amount = charge amount minus platform fee minus Stripe fees you absorb. Verify: seller amount is less than or equal to charge amount.', 'If the split needs to exceed the charge (e.g. subsidized payouts), use separate charges and transfers instead of destination charges. Verify: the transfer references available platform balance.', 'Resubmit with the corrected amount. Verify: the charge creates successfully.', 'Add a pre-submit assertion in your marketplace code: transfer amount must never exceed charge amount. Verify: the assertion fires in tests.')

Compatibility: Stripe Connect destination charges API, all client versions.

## Why it happens
A destination charge transfers money out of the charge to the connected account. The transfer cannot exceed what came in, because there is no other funding source on a destination charge. When platform-fee math is wrong (fee applied twice, currency conversion rounded up, or a hardcoded payout), the requested transfer exceeds the collection and Stripe rejects it rather than funding the gap from your balance.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Currency conversion can push the transfer over the charge by a cent. Floor your math, do not round up.
- Platform fees are taken from the charge too. The seller gets charge minus everything.
- Separate charges and transfers draw from platform balance, which changes failure modes. Choose deliberately.
- Log the fee math on every marketplace charge so finance can audit splits later.
