hubspot workflow enrollment ENROLLMENT_FAILED when agent adds contact missing required property

Export

Fixes HubSpot workflow ENROLLMENT_FAILED when the agent enrolls a contact missing a required property. Use when enrollment fails and the error names a property. Not for enrollment limits, inactive workflows, or permission errors.

TL;DR

The workflow requires a property the contact does not have, so enrollment fails at the gate. Before enrolling, fetch the contact and check every required property; backfill what is missing or skip the contact with a clear reason, then enroll.

Steps

  1. Read the ENROLLMENT_FAILED response and identify exactly which property the workflow requires. Expected: the missing property name is in the error detail.

  2. Fetch the contact's current properties and confirm the property is genuinely absent, not just empty under a different internal name. Expected: you know whether it is missing or misnamed.

  3. Backfill the property from your source data (the lead list, the enrichment record) and update the contact, or set a sensible default the workflow accepts. Expected: the contact now carries every required property.

  4. Re-run the enrollment for that contact. Expected: enrollment returns success.

  5. Add a pre-enrollment check to the agent: fetch required properties first, backfill or skip with a logged reason, and only then call enroll. Expected: ENROLLMENT_FAILED stops appearing in bulk runs.

Use this when

  • Enrollment fails and the error names a required property.
  • The workflow was recently edited to require a new property.
  • Contacts come from a source that does not set every field.

Not for this skill when

  • The workflow itself is inactive or the agent lacks enrollment permission.
  • Enrollment fails for contacts that have all properties (a different gate).
  • The error is a rate limit or auth failure.

Variant phrasings

  • "hubspot enrollment failed missing required property"
  • "workflow enrollment requires property agent"
  • "ENROLLMENT_FAILED contact property hubspot"

Why it happens

Workflows can declare required properties as enrollment guards. Agents usually enroll by contact id alone and never check the guards, so the first contact missing one fails the whole batch step. The workflow is working as designed; the agent skipped the precondition.

Edge cases

  • Required properties can be added to a workflow after the agent was built. Re-read the workflow definition when failures start suddenly.
  • A property can exist but hold a value the workflow's branch logic rejects. Read the branch conditions, not just the required list.
  • Do not invent property values to satisfy the gate. Backfill from real data or skip the contact.
