tax category missing on expense: sync failed to netsuite
Fixes NetSuite sync failures caused by a missing tax category by setting the tax code on each expense line. Use when expenses will not sync to NetSuite because tax coding is absent. Not for INVALID_ACCT errors (separate skill).
TL;DR
NetSuite requires a tax code on expense lines, and the sync fails when it is missing. Set the correct tax category on each failed line in the expense tool (or in the integration's default tax mapping), then re-run the sync.
Error
tax category missing on expense: sync failed to netsuiteSteps
- Open the failed sync batch and read which lines are missing tax coding. Expected: the specific lines are listed.
- Determine the correct tax code for each line's expense type and jurisdiction (ask finance if unsure). Expected: you know which code applies.
- Set the tax category on each line in the expense tool. Expected: every line carries a tax code.
- In the integration settings, set a default tax code for the category so future expenses inherit it. Expected: the default is saved.
- Re-run the NetSuite sync. Expected: the expenses post with tax coding intact.
When to use
- NetSuite sync fails citing missing tax category or tax code.
- The failure is specific to lines lacking tax coding.
When not to use
- The sync fails with INVALID_ACCT (see the account-mapping skill).
- The tax code is present but wrong (correct the code, then re-sync).
Tool compatibility
- NetSuite ERP; Expensify, Ramp, Brex NetSuite integrations.
Variant phrasings
Missing tax code on sync
Same failure, shorter wording.
Tax category required for NetSuite posting
The validation phrasing of the same requirement.
Why it happens
NetSuite posts tax amounts per line and needs the tax code to do it. Expense tools that do not require tax codes at entry produce lines NetSuite cannot accept, so the sync rejects them.
