## TL;DR
Cards announce their expiry months ahead; cancellations from expiry are a notification failure, not a customer failure. Check whether expiry data is even collected from the processor, whether pre-expiry messages send and land, and whether a grace period exists between failed charge and cancellation. Rebuild whichever link is missing.

```text
credit card expired: failed to notify customer before cancellation
```

## Use this when
- Accounts cancelled with expired-card as the recorded cause
- No pre-expiry email or in-app prompt appears in the logs
- The processor does return card expiry metadata

## Not for this skill when
- The customer's bank reissued the card with a new number and the old one hard-declined
- The account had other delinquency before the expiry

## Steps
1. List accounts cancelled for expiry in 90 days and check each for any pre-expiry contact in the message logs. Verify: the contact gap is confirmed per account, not assumed
2. Verify the billing system stores card expiry dates from the processor and can query cards expiring in 60 days. Verify: the data needed for warnings exists or its absence is the root cause
3. Build or repair the warning sequence: 30-day, 7-day, and failed-charge messages with a direct card-update link. Verify: the sequence is live and a test card triggers it
4. Set a grace period between first failed charge and cancellation that matches your retry schedule. Verify: cancellation cannot precede the final retry and final notice
5. Offer the recently cancelled accounts a reinstatement path with charges waived for the gap. Verify: affected accounts get a concrete way back

Compatibility: Compatibility: card billing via Stripe, Adyen, or Braintree with lifecycle email tooling, current versions.

## Why it happens
Expiry is the most predictable churn cause in subscription business: the date is known a year ahead. When it still cancels accounts silently, the chain from processor metadata to message to grace period has a missing link, and each link can be checked independently.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Account updater services silently replace many cards. Check updater coverage before blaming notifications for all expiry churn.
- Card-update links that require the admin who left the company create a dead end. Allow any verified billing contact to update.
- Seasonal businesses may prefer annual contact. Keep the warning, let them snooze it, but never skip it entirely.
