wsus client error 0x80244019 not found how to fix

Fixes WSUS client error 0x80244019, where the client gets an HTTP 404 from the WSUS server for content or metadata it requested. Use when specific clients or updates return not found from WSUS. Not for DNS failures where the WSUS server name does not resolve at all.

TL;DR

WSUS error 0x80244019 is an HTTP 404: the client asked the WSUS server for something the server does not have, usually declined or missing content, a file that failed to download to WSUS, or a client pointed at the wrong server path. On the server, check the update approval and content download state for the failing KB, run a server cleanup, and confirm the client policy URL includes the right port and server. Fix the server content first, then force the client to detect again.

Use this when

  • Clients report 0x80244019 for one update while other updates install fine, or for all updates after a WSUS change.
  • WindowsUpdate.log shows an HTTP 404 response from the WSUS server URL.
  • The WSUS console shows the update approved but its content download failed or is still downloading.

Not for this skill when

  • The WSUS name does not resolve in DNS. That is a name resolution failure, covered by the cannot connect skill.
  • The WSUS application pool is stopped and clients get 503 responses. Restore pool health first.

Steps

  1. Identify exactly what was requested when the 404 occurred: from a failing client, note the KB being scanned or downloaded and the full WSUS URL including port in WindowsUpdate.log. A single-KB 404 and an all-updates 404 are different faults, and the log separates them immediately. Verify: you know whether the 404 is for one update file or for the scan endpoint itself, with the URL recorded
  2. On the WSUS server, find that update in the console and check its file status. If the content download failed or is incomplete, check free space on the WSUS content volume, confirm the server can reach Microsoft Update, and restart the download by re-approving or running a synchronization. Verify: the update shows content downloaded successfully on the server, or a concrete download blocker such as disk space is found and fixed
  3. Run the WSUS Server Cleanup Wizard options for unused updates and update revisions, and decline updates that are superseded and no longer needed. Stale metadata makes clients request revisions the server has removed, which is a classic source of 404 responses during scan. Verify: cleanup completes and the number of unneeded revisions drops, with no errors in the WSUS event log
  4. Verify the client-side target: confirm the group policy Specify intranet Microsoft update service location value matches the actual WSUS server name and port, commonly 8530 for HTTP or 8531 for HTTPS, and that no old server name remains in a second policy. Force a policy update and restart the Windows Update service on a test client. Verify: the test client policy shows the correct server and port and its next log entries reference that URL
  5. From the test client run a detect cycle and a download of the previously failing update. Only roll the fix wider once one client completes cleanly, because a server-side content fault will otherwise reappear across the fleet at once. Verify: the test client scans and downloads the update without 0x80244019, and a second client confirms the fix

Why it happens

WSUS clients do not download from Microsoft; they request metadata and files from the WSUS server by exact identifiers. If an update revision was declined or cleaned up on the server while clients still hold metadata pointing at it, or if the server approved an update whose payload never finished downloading, the server correctly answers 404 for a file it does not have. Clients surface that as 0x80244019. The mismatch is between what clients believe exists and what the server actually holds, so the durable fix is reconciling server content and metadata, then letting clients re-detect against the corrected server state.

Variants and edge cases

0x80244019 for every update after WSUS reinstall

Clients hold metadata from the old server database. Reset the client detection state on a test machine, confirm it rebuilds against the new server, then script the same reset for the fleet.

0x80244019 only for drivers or one classification

The classification may be approved but its content filtered or its download failed. Check classification sync results and content state for that class specifically.

0x80244019 through an upstream and downstream WSUS pair

The downstream server can approve content its upstream has not replicated. Compare the update file status on both servers before touching clients.

Compatibility: Applies to WSUS on Windows Server 2016 and later, with Windows 10, Windows 11, and Server clients. Content checks need WSUS console access.
