## TL;DR
Kount RIS 702 means Kount rejected your authentication, and the usual cause is a mismatched set: a production API key sent to the test endpoint, a test key sent to production, or a key that belongs to a different merchant id than the one in the request. Verify the three values as a set from the Kount console for one environment, point the client at the matching RIS endpoint for that environment, and retest with a single inquiry. Do not rotate keys blindly; a correct key on the wrong endpoint fails identically.

```text
kount ris error 702 authentication failed: how to fix
```

## Use this when
- All RIS inquiries return 702 after a deploy or credential change.
- One environment works and the other fails auth on every call.
- A new API key was issued and inquiries broke immediately.

## Not for this skill when
- Only the merchant id is rejected with a different error code. Fix the id value itself.
- Auth passes and the response is a decline. That is a decision, not an authentication failure.

## Steps
1. Capture one failing request with its endpoint URL, merchant id, and the key identifier or fingerprint your config loaded, with the secret value itself kept out of logs. Verify: you can state which environment and key the client actually used.
2. In the Kount console for that same environment, confirm the merchant id and that the API key is active and belongs to that merchant. Verify: console and client config name the same merchant and an active key.
3. Align the endpoint: test credentials go to the test RIS endpoint and production credentials to the production endpoint, with no mixing. Verify: the endpoint host matches the credential environment.
4. Send one test inquiry with a known test card pattern for that environment and confirm a scored response instead of 702. Verify: the response contains a decision and score fields.
5. Store the credential set per environment in your secret manager with the environment in the entry name, and alert on any 702 in production logs. Verify: a staged bad credential triggers the alert in staging, not silence.

## Variant phrasings
### kount 702 auth failed ris
Code first phrasing.
### kount api key rejected after rotation
Rotation phrasing.
### kount test key on production endpoint
Environment mixup phrasing.

Compatibility: Kount RIS, both the classic inquiry flow and Kount 360 integrations that still call RIS. Endpoint hosts differ by environment and by data center, so copy them from your Kount console rather than from old code.

## Why it happens
Kount authenticates the combination of merchant, key, and endpoint, not the key alone. Credential sets get copied between environments during launches and incidents, and each value looks plausible in isolation. The service answers with a single auth error that does not say which leg of the tripod is wrong, so teams rotate the one value that was actually correct.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- A key can be active for the portal but not enabled for RIS. Confirm the product entitlement, not just the key status.
- Clock skew rarely causes this on RIS, so do not chase time sync before checking the credential set.
- After fixing auth, expect a burst of queued retries. Throttle the replay so you do not trip rate limits on a freshly fixed integration.
