## TL;DR
`bw sync` fails when the vault is locked, the session expired, or the CLI points at the wrong server. Check `bw status`, unlock or log in again, confirm the server URL, then sync. Sync completes once the session is valid.

## Error
```text
bitwarden: failed to sync vault from cli
```

## Steps
1. Check session state: run `bw status` and look at the `status` and `serverUrl` fields. Expected: you see whether the vault is locked, unlocked, or logged out, and which server the CLI targets.
2. If the server URL is wrong (common with self-hosted instances), set it with `bw config server` to the correct URL and log in again. Expected: `bw status` shows the right server.
3. If logged out, run `bw login` and complete the flow; if locked, run `bw unlock` and export the session key the command prints into your shell session. Expected: `bw status` reports unlocked.
4. Retry `bw sync`. Expected: the command reports a successful sync and the local cache updates.
5. If sync still fails, check network egress to the server URL and confirm the account is not locked for too many attempts. Expected: connectivity confirmed, or a clear account-level block to resolve.

## When to use
- `bw sync` errors from the CLI or a script
- Scripts that worked yesterday fail today (session expiry)
- Pointing the CLI at a self-hosted Bitwarden server

## When not to use
- Sync works but an item is missing (organization or collection permissions)
- Web vault issues (server-side, not CLI session)

## Tool compatibility
- Bitwarden CLI (`bw status`, `bw login`, `bw unlock`, `bw sync`, `bw config server`)

## Variant phrasings
### bw sync requires unlock first
Unlocking decrypts the local vault; sync needs an active unlocked session, so `bw unlock` must precede `bw sync` in scripts.

### bitwarden cli session expired
Sessions expire; re-login (or re-unlock with a stored session key) at the start of long-running jobs.

## Why it happens
The CLI keeps an encrypted local cache that only syncs over an authenticated session. Sessions expire, vaults lock after inactivity, and a CLI configured for bitwarden.com cannot sync against a self-hosted server, all of which surface as a generic sync failure.
