## TL;DR
Slow the client down and batch the writes: an agent or loop logging hyperparameters and metrics at full speed trips the API's 429 limit, after which calls fail until the window resets. Add exponential backoff with jitter on 429 responses, batch params into single calls, and cache reads instead of polling the API per step.

```text
'wandb.error.CommError: HTTP 429' rate limit failure when agent logs hyperparameters
```

## Use this when
- The run or call fails with this symptom: wandb.error.CommError: HTTP 429 when logging hyperparameters.
- You are working on an agent or sweep logging to W and B in a tight loop and the failure repeats on the same run or configuration.
- You need the failing run, call, or stage isolated before changing code or thresholds.

## Not for this skill when
- A 429 caused by many parallel jobs sharing one account key, where the fix is spreading jobs or keys rather than one client's backoff.
- The error text names a different tool, stage, or root cause. Match the verbatim error first and use that skill.

## Steps
1. Count the client's API calls per minute in the failing loop, including hidden retries and per-step reads. Verify: the call rate is measured
2. Replace per-item calls with batched ones: one config update, one log call per step with all metrics together. Verify: call volume drops to a small multiple of the step rate
3. Wrap remaining calls in retry logic that honours the retry-after guidance with exponential backoff and jitter. Verify: a 429 now pauses instead of failing the run
4. Rerun the loop and confirm a full cycle completes without a 429 while all values land. Verify: logging completes and the run shows every value

## Variant phrasings
### wandb http 429 rate limit logging hyperparameters
The verbatim phrasing.
### wandb commerror 429 agent loop backoff fix
The backoff phrasing.
### weights and biases api rate limit too many requests
The limit phrasing.

Compatibility: Weights and Biases API rate limits under automated logging

## Why it happens
Rate limits count requests, not data, so chatty clients exhaust them with tiny calls. Agent loops are chattier than training scripts because they poll and probe, and the limit arrives as a hard failure unless the client is written to back off.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Parallel agents share the account's limit; coordinate pacing centrally when several run at once.
- Reads for a dashboard the agent builds can dominate writes; cache run metadata for minutes, not seconds.
