Immutable solution version

sift api error: rate limit exceeded on score api

Version 1

Complete solution

Handles Sift Score API rate-limit errors. Covers backoff with jitter, caching scores, moving scoring off the synchronous path, and requesting a quota increase. Not for timeouts, and not for Decisions API limits.

TL;DR

Back off with jitter and retry, but treat repeated 429s as a capacity problem, not a transient one. Cache scores per user and session so repeat checks do not burn quota, and move scoring off the synchronous checkout path where possible. If legitimate volume exceeds the limit, request a quota increase from Sift with your traffic numbers.

sift api error: rate limit exceeded on score api

Use this when

  • The Score API returns 429 rate limit exceeded.
  • The errors cluster during peak traffic.
  • Your volume has grown past the original quota.

Not for this skill when

  • Calls time out instead of returning 429. That is a latency problem.
  • The Decisions API is limited. That quota is separate.
  • A single client is hammering the API. Fix the client loop first.

Steps

  1. Implement exponential backoff with jitter on 429 responses. Verify: retries spread out instead of firing in lockstep.
  2. Cache score responses keyed by user and session for a short window. Verify: repeat checks for the same user hit the cache, not the API.
  3. Move scoring off the synchronous request path: score async and gate fulfillment on the result. Verify: checkout no longer blocks on the Score API.
  4. Audit which events actually need scoring and drop the rest. Verify: request volume falls without losing coverage.
  5. If legitimate volume still exceeds the quota, request an increase with your peak numbers. Verify: Sift confirms the new limit.

Variant phrasings

sift score api 429 too many requests

Status-code phrasing.

sift rate limited on scoring

Shorter phrasing.

sift quota exceeded score api

Quota phrasing.

Compatibility: Sift Score API rate limits; quotas are per account. Client-side caching and async patterns are integration choices.

Why it happens

Score API quotas are sized for expected volume, and growth, retries, and duplicate scoring all consume it. A tight synchronous integration that scores every page view will hit the cap long before a lean one that scores decision points.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Aggressive retries during a 429 storm make it worse. Back off, do not hammer.
  • Caching scores too long lets fraud slip through on stale data. Keep the window short.
  • Scoring every event type wastes quota. Score the events that drive decisions.
  • During an active 429 storm, shed load first: pause non-critical scoring jobs before retrying the critical path.
