Solution skill

period close checklist stuck: bank rec step shows "in progress" error for 6 hours

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes a period close checklist stuck with the bank rec step in progress for 6 hours: determine whether the rec job is alive, stalled on a lock, or orphaned, then clear and rerun it cleanly. Use when a close step hangs with no progress signal. Not for a rec step legitimately waiting on a person.

TL;DR

An in-progress status for six hours means the job died silently, is waiting on a lock held by a dead session, or is queued behind something that will never finish. Check the job's actual state in the task or process list, look for locks on the bank account or period, and check whether any output has been produced. If the job is orphaned, terminate it, release its locks, and rerun the rec step while watching it complete.

Use this when

  • The close checklist shows the bank rec step in progress for hours, here 6, with no new output.
  • No user can see rec results arriving, and the step's expected duration is minutes.
  • Other close steps depending on the rec are blocked behind it.

Not for this skill when

  • The step is waiting on a human approval or an external statement that has not arrived. The status is honest; chase the input, not the job.
  • The rec job is progressing slowly on an unusually large account. Progress evidence, such as growing output, means let it run.

Steps

  1. Open the job or process monitor and find the rec step's task: its start time, last activity, and worker state. Verify: the task is shown as running, stalled, or orphaned from system data
  2. Check for locks on the bank account, the period, or the rec record, and note which session holds them. Verify: any lock and its owning session are identified
  3. Look for partial output: draft rec records, matched counts, or log lines after the start time. Verify: you know whether the job did real work before stalling
  4. If orphaned or dead-locked, terminate the task and release its locks per platform procedure, preserving any partial output for review. Verify: the checklist step returns to a not-started or failed state you control
  5. Rerun the bank rec step and monitor it to completion, then advance the checklist. Verify: the step completes with a rec result attached and dependent steps unblock

Variant phrasings

close checklist stuck in progress bank rec step hung

The stuck-step phrasing.

period close job stalled lock orphaned task

When clearing a dead task.

Compatibility: Close management and job monitoring in NetSuite, Sage, BlackLine and FloQast-style checklists, and ERP task queues.

Why it happens

Checklist systems track status, not health: a step flips to in progress when its job starts and flips again only if the job reports back. A job that crashes without reporting, or deadlocks against its own earlier session, never reports, so the checklist displays eternal progress. The truth lives in the process list and the lock table, which is why experienced closers check those before touching the checklist itself.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Long in-progress states should auto-alert at a threshold like twice the normal duration. Six silent hours is a monitoring gap as well as a job failure.
  • A lock held by an interactive user session, someone who left a rec open, blocks batch steps identically to a dead job. The lock owner check distinguishes them.
  • After clearing, note the stall on the close record; repeated stalls on the same step justify investigating volume or lock design, not just reruns.
