Immutable solution version

prefect artifact creation failed, result storage misconfigured

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes Prefect artifact and result persistence failures caused by a result storage block that is missing, unreachable, or not writable, covering storage blocks, local versus remote results, and permissions. Use when runs fail at persisting results or creating artifacts. Not for a markdown artifact whose content is merely formatted badly.

TL;DR

Prefect persists task results and artifacts through a storage block, and when that block points at a bucket or path the worker cannot reach or write, runs fail at the end of otherwise good work. Check which result storage the flow resolves, test writing to it from the worker environment with the worker identity, fix the block or the permissions, and set a sensible persist setting per task so cheap tasks do not depend on remote storage at all.

prefect artifact creation failed, result storage misconfigured

Use this when

  • Runs fail while persisting results or creating an artifact, after the main work succeeded.
  • The error names a storage block, a bucket, or a filesystem path.
  • Results worked locally and fail on a remote worker, or the reverse.

Not for this skill when

  • The task itself failed and there is no result to persist. Fix the task error first.
  • You only want to view an existing artifact and the UI cannot load it. That is a read path issue.

Steps

  1. Read the run error and note the exact step that failed and the storage block or path it names. Note whether it failed on write, on a missing block, or on serialising the result. Verify: the failing persistence stage is named
  2. Resolve the effective result storage for the flow: the flow and task persist settings, any result_storage block, and the default for the workspace. Note which storage a failing task actually uses. Verify: the storage in play is identified, not assumed from defaults
  3. From the worker environment, with the worker identity, write and read back a small test object at that location. Note the platform error if the write fails. Verify: reachability and write permission are proven from the worker side
  4. Fix the block or the permission: correct the bucket or path, grant the worker identity write access, or point the block at storage that exists in this environment. Note the change in the block configuration. Verify: storage matches the environment the worker runs in
  5. For tasks whose results are only used in memory by the next task, consider turning result persistence off deliberately, then rerun the flow and confirm artifacts appear in the UI. Note the created artifact id. Verify: persistence is intentional per task and the flow completes

Variant phrasings

prefect result persistence failed storage block

The result storage phrasing.

prefect createmarkdownartifact error storage

The artifact call version of the failure.

Compatibility: Prefect 2.x and 3.x result persistence and artifacts, with local file, S3, GCS, and Azure style storage blocks. Block types and result settings differ in name across major versions.

Why it happens

In Prefect, results are not just return values in memory once flows run distributed: they are written to storage so other processes, retries, and the UI can use them. That makes storage configuration part of the execution path, and it fails in environment shaped ways. A block created against a laptop path or a dev bucket follows the deployment to a worker where that path or bucket does not exist or belongs to someone else, and the flow fails at the finish line with an error that mentions storage, not the work that actually mattered.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Unserialisable results, such as open connections or live objects, fail at the same stage with a different message. Read for a serialisation error before blaming storage.
  • Persisting very large results through remote storage slows every run. Persist a reference, such as the table or file the task wrote, instead of the data itself.
  • Storage blocks hold configuration, sometimes including credentials references. Recreate blocks per environment rather than copying a block between workspaces.
  • A worker that can write but not read back will pass creation and fail downstream tasks. Test both directions.
