## TL;DR

The initiator is the Daraja API user authorized to start B2C payments: if its name, password, or security credential is wrong for the environment, every payout is rejected with the initiator information is invalid. Confirm the initiator name exactly as registered, reset its password if needed, regenerate the security credential for the right environment, and retry the payout. Sandbox and production initiators are separate.

```text
mpesa daraja "the initiator information is invalid" on B2C payout
```

## Use this when

- Daraja B2C payout fails with the initiator information is invalid
- You just moved from sandbox to production
- Initiator credentials were rotated or reset

## Not for this skill when

- The payout fails with insufficient funds (a balance problem)
- You get a timeout rather than a rejection
- You are debugging C2B or STK push flows

## Steps

1. Confirm the initiator name character-for-character against the Daraja portal registration.
   Expected: The name matches exactly, including case.
2. Verify you are using the initiator registered in the same environment as the API call (sandbox vs production).
   Expected: Environment and initiator line up.
3. Regenerate the security credential for that environment and use it in the payout request.
   Expected: The credential is fresh and environment-correct.
4. If the password was changed, update the stored password and retry.
   Expected: Authentication inputs are all current.
5. Submit a small test B2C payout to confirm the initiator is accepted.
   Expected: The payout is accepted without the initiator error.

## Tool compatibility

M-Pesa Daraja B2C payment request API; initiator credentials are managed in the Daraja portal.

## Variant phrasings

### daraja b2c initiator invalid

Short form of the same payout error.

### mpesa initiator name password wrong

The credential angle of the failure.

### daraja security credential invalid b2c

Points at the security credential specifically.

## Why it happens

Daraja separates the API consumer (your app) from the initiator (the named user allowed to move money), and B2C payouts require both to authenticate. The initiator's name, password, and security credential are issued per environment, so sandbox credentials are meaningless in production. Any mismatch, a typo in the name, a stale password, or a credential generated for the wrong environment, fails closed with this error. It is an authentication failure, not a funds or network problem.

## Edge cases / pitfalls

- The security credential must be generated against the correct environment's certificate; a sandbox credential in production always fails.
- After a password reset, all stored copies must be updated; partial updates cause intermittent failures.
- Log which initiator name was used (never the password) so mismatches are diagnosable.
