dbt-snowflake: 250001: Could not connect to Snowflake backend after 2 attempt(s)

Export

Fixes dbt-snowflake connection failures with error 250001 Could not connect to Snowflake backend after 2 attempts. Use when dbt debug or run cannot reach Snowflake at all. Not for authentication failures, which return a different error code.

TL;DR

dbt could not open a network connection to Snowflake after retrying. Check the account identifier format, then network egress: most cases are a wrong account locator (missing region or cloud suffix), a firewall or proxy blocking port 443, or a private-link setup pointing at the wrong host. Fix the profile host values and network path, then prove it with dbt debug.

dbt-snowflake: 250001: Could not connect to Snowflake backend after 2 attempt(s)

Use this when

  • dbt debug or dbt run fails with 250001 Could not connect to Snowflake backend after 2 attempt(s)
  • no query ever reaches Snowflake; query history shows nothing for the user
  • the setup is new, moved networks, or enabled PrivateLink or a proxy

Not for this skill when

  • Snowflake rejects the login with an incorrect username or auth error, that is credentials, not connectivity
  • connections work but queries time out, that is warehouse sizing or query cost
  • only one model fails with a SQL error, the connection is fine

Steps

  1. Copy the account value from profiles.yml and compare it character by character with the account identifier in the Snowflake console, including region and cloud segments such as xy12345.us-east-1 or the privatelink variant if you use PrivateLink. Verify: the profile account matches the console identifier for your connection type.

  2. From the same machine or CI runner that runs dbt, test plain HTTPS reachability to the Snowflake host on port 443 with curl to the account URL. If it fails, fix egress, proxy settings, or allowlist rules for Snowflake hosts. Verify: curl reaches the Snowflake login page response from the dbt host.

  3. Check for proxy environment variables that dbt picks up inconsistently, and if your org requires a proxy, set it consistently for the dbt process; if you use PrivateLink, confirm the profile uses the privatelink account URL and the internal DNS resolves it. Verify: network settings for the dbt process match the org requirement and DNS resolves the account host.

  4. Run dbt debug and confirm the connection check passes, then run dbt run --select on one small model. Verify: dbt debug reports ok and the small model builds.

Variant phrasings

works on VPN, fails in CI

CI runners sit outside the allowlist. Add the runner egress IPs to the Snowflake network policy or route CI through an allowed network.

intermittent 250001

Flaky DNS or a proxy dropping long polls causes sporadic failures. Capture whether failures cluster by time or runner before changing profile values.

Compatibility: dbt-snowflake (snowflake-connector-python) on dbt-core 1.x. Requires outbound 443 to Snowflake account hosts and OCSP endpoints unless fail-open is configured.

Why it happens

250001 is raised by the Snowflake connector before authentication: it retried the HTTPS connection to the account endpoint and never got a usable response. That makes it a locator or network problem by definition. Auth, role, and warehouse problems all produce different codes because they happen after the connection exists.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Account identifiers copied from browser URLs often include extra path segments; use the identifier, not the full URL.
  • OCSP revocation checks fail on locked-down networks and look like connect failures; check connector logs for OCSP wording before changing accounts.
  • Do not raise retries as a fix for a hard block; retries only help genuinely transient drops.
