## TL;DR
A Pandera dtype failure means the DataFrame's actual dtype differs from the schema's declared dtype, often object instead of int after a read that met empty values: print the schema and the frame dtypes side by side, coerce at the read boundary with explicit dtypes, and let unparseable values fail loudly at that boundary rather than inside validation.

```text
pandas validation error failed: pandera schema check failed with column dtype error
```

## Use this when
- The check or run fails with this symptom: the Pandera check fails because a column dtype does not match the schema.
- You are working on a Pandera schema failing on a column dtype in a Pandas pipeline and the failure repeats on the same data or configuration.
- You need the failing rows, rule, or stage isolated before changing thresholds or code.

## Not for this skill when
- A Pandera failure on null values rather than dtype, which needs the nullability path instead.
- The error text names a different tool, stage, or root cause. Match the verbatim error first and use that skill.

## Steps
1. Print the DataFrame dtypes and the Pandera schema's expected dtypes in one comparison. Verify: expected and actual dtypes are side by side
2. Inspect sample values in the mismatched column for strings, mixed types, or all-null reads that forced an object dtype. Verify: the values behind the dtype are seen
3. Find the read step and its dtype handling: CSV inference, JSON flattening, or a merge that upcast the column. Verify: the read step responsible is identified
4. Set explicit dtypes at read time and coerce with errors raised to a quarantine path for bad values. Verify: the frame is built with the contracted dtypes
5. Rerun the Pandera validation on the rebuilt frame and on a frame containing the previously bad values. Verify: validation passes on clean data and rejects bad values at the boundary

## Variant phrasings
### pandera schema check failed column dtype error
The verbatim Pandera dtype phrasing.
### pandera dtype mismatch object vs int pandas
The inference phrasing for object-typed numeric columns.
### pandera validation failing after csv read dtype
The CSV-read phrasing for inferred dtype changes.

Compatibility: Pandera schemas in Pandas pipelines, with dtype checks on DataFrame columns

## Why it happens
Pandas infers dtypes from whatever a read encounters, so one empty file, one string in a numeric column, or one merge can silently change a dtype that Pandera then rejects. The schema is the contract; the inference at read time is the moving part.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Declare dtypes in the reader, not only in the schema. Two declarations that agree are the point.
- Check dtype after every merge in long pipelines. Merges are the most common silent upcast.
