partial capture larger than the authorized amount: acquirer rejected

Version 1Sign in to save

Complete solution

Fixes an acquirer rejection when a partial capture exceeds the authorized amount. Shows an agent how to compare capture against authorization and either reduce the capture or void and re-authorize the full amount. Use for auth-then-capture flows where the final total grew. Do not use for captures within the authorized amount or for charging the extra as a separate payment without checking policy.

partial capture larger than the authorized amount: acquirer rejected

TL;DR: you cannot capture more than you authorized. The acquirer rejected the capture because the amount exceeded the authorization. Capture only up to the authorized amount, or void the authorization and create a new one for the full total.

partial capture larger than the authorized amount: acquirer rejected
  1. Compare the capture amount against the authorized amount on the PaymentIntent or charge. Expected: the capture is larger, which is the whole problem.
  2. Cancel the oversized capture attempt if it is still pending. Expected: no duplicate capture lands.
  3. Either capture an amount at or below the authorization, or void the authorization and authorize the full new amount. Expected: the money moves in one clean capture.
  4. If the final total grows because of tips or shipping adjustments, authorize the higher amount up front next time. Expected: the capture fits inside the authorization.
  5. Add a guard in code: the capture amount must be less than or equal to the authorized amount. Expected: this rejection stops happening.

When this applies:

  • Auth-then-capture flows where the final total grew
  • Partial captures summing past the authorization

When it doesn't:

  • Capturing less than authorized (always fine)
  • Separate new charges for the extra amount (valid alternative, check your policy)

Compatibility: Stripe API 2025-XX auth and capture; any acquirer with auth/capture semantics.

capture amount exceeds authorized amount rejected

Reduce the capture or re-authorize higher.

acquirer rejected capture, amount too high

The acquirer enforces the authorization limit strictly.

cannot capture more than authorized

An authorization is a promise for a specific amount; the capture must honor it.

Why it happens: an authorization is the issuer's promise for a specific amount. Capturing above it breaks that promise, so the acquirer refuses. Some acquirers tolerate a small percentage over for tips, but that is a courtesy, not a rule.

Edge cases: multi-capture setups let you capture in pieces, but the sum still cannot exceed the authorization. Currency conversion rounding can push a capture a cent over; authorize a small buffer to absorb it. Voiding and re-authorizing risks a second decline, so prefer it only when the increase is real.
