Solution skill

welcome email stuck sendgrid suppression list

Version 1

Complete solution

Gets welcome emails unstuck when the recipient sits on a SendGrid suppression list. For onboarding flows where new users never receive their welcome email. Trigger: welcome emails sent but never delivered, recipient on a suppression list. Not for template or content problems.

TL;DR

Your welcome email never arrived because the recipient's address is on a SendGrid suppression list (bounces, spam reports, or unsubscribes), and SendGrid drops those sends silently. The fix: look the address up in suppressions, confirm why it is listed, remove it if the listing is stale or wrong, and resend. Then fix the root cause so real users stop landing on the list.

The error

SendGrid: message "dropped" - reason: suppressed
Suppression check: address found on bounce list

Steps

  1. Look up the address in SendGrid suppressions. Check the bounce, spam report, and unsubscribe lists. Expected output: the address appears on one list with a reason and timestamp.
  2. Judge whether the listing is valid. A spam complaint from two years ago on a re-engaged user is stale; a hard bounce from yesterday is real. Expected output: a keep-or-remove decision with the evidence.
  3. Remove the address from the list if it should receive mail. Delete the suppression entry. Expected output: a fresh lookup shows the address clear.
  4. Resend the welcome email. Expected output: SendGrid accepts the send and the activity feed shows delivered, not dropped.
  5. Fix the root cause. If signups keep landing on the bounce list, check for typos at signup, disposable domains, or a broken double opt-in. Expected output: new signups stop appearing on suppression lists.

When to use

  • Welcome emails show as sent but the user never receives anything
  • SendGrid activity shows the message as dropped or suppressed
  • The problem affects specific addresses, not all mail

When not to use

  • No mail goes out at all: check your API key, sender authentication, and sending limits
  • The email arrives but looks broken: template problem, not suppression
  • The user finds it in spam: deliverability and content problem, not the suppression list

Tool compatibility

SendGrid suppression management: bounce, spam report, and unsubscribe lists, via the dashboard or the suppression API. The lookup-then-remove flow is the same in any SendGrid plan with suppression management.

Variant phrasings

sendgrid welcome email not delivered

Check suppressions before the template.

sendgrid suppressed email

The address is blocked at the SendGrid level.

sendgrid dropped welcome email

Dropped usually means suppression, not a send failure.

new user never got welcome email

Look the address up in the suppression lists first.

Why it happens

Suppression lists are SendGrid's memory of addresses that bounced, complained, or unsubscribed. Once an address is listed, SendGrid refuses to send to it, which protects your sender reputation. The trouble is that listings outlive their reasons: an address that hard-bounced during a mail server outage two years ago is still blocked today, or a user marked a marketing email as spam and then signed up for the product expecting transactional mail. The list did its job at the time; it just needs a human to review entries whose reasons no longer apply.

Edge cases

  • Spam complaints cannot be re-added by you in some setups: the user must resubscribe themselves. Check which list type allows admin removal.
  • The address reappears on the list after removal: the next send is still bouncing. Fix the mailbox problem before removing again.
  • Bulk removal: removing thousands of stale suppressions at once can spike sends. Pace the resends.
  • Legal: some regions treat removing an unsubscribe as a compliance risk. Keep a record of why each removal was justified.
