## TL;DR
A wiped iPhone re-enrolls itself if it is still assigned to your MDM server in Apple Business Manager with an ADE profile attached. Verify the assignment in ABM, confirm the MDM has a profile for it, then erase the phone and walk through Setup Assistant. The Remote Management screen appears on its own; if it does not, the assignment is wrong.

## Steps
1. In Apple Business Manager, go to Devices and search for the iPhone's serial number. Expected: the device is listed. If it is not there, it was released or never added; nothing else in this skill applies.
2. Check the device's MDM server assignment. Expected: it points at your MDM server, not another one. Reassignment after a wipe is the most common reason the Remote Management screen never shows.
3. In your MDM, confirm an Automated Device Enrollment profile is assigned to the device or its group. Expected: the profile shows as assigned. ABM assignment without an MDM profile enrolls the device into nothing.
4. Erase the iPhone: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. Expected: the phone restarts to the Hello screen. Enrollment triggers at activation, so a non-wiped phone will never pick up the new assignment.
5. Go through Setup Assistant with network access. Expected: the Remote Management screen appears and enrollment completes. If it does not appear, recheck steps 2 and 3 before erasing again.

## Use this when
- A wiped iPhone should auto-enroll but skips Remote Management
- Reassigning a returned device to a different user
- Moving devices between MDM servers after a migration

## Not for this skill when
- The iPhone was bought retail and never added to ABM (use manual enrollment)
- You want to enroll without wiping (ADE requires activation; manual enrollment is the alternative)
- The device is supervised already and just needs a profile push

## Compatibility
- Apple Business Manager with any MDM supporting Automated Device Enrollment; iOS 15+

## Variants
### Remote Management appears but enrollment fails
The MDM profile or the network is the problem now, not ABM. Check the MDM's enrollment logs and make sure the phone can reach the MDM server.

### Device shows in ABM but assigned to the wrong MDM
Reassign it in ABM, wait a few minutes for the change to propagate, then erase. The phone reads the assignment at activation time.

## Why it happens
Automated Device Enrollment is a handshake at activation: the phone asks Apple which MDM owns it, Apple answers from the ABM assignment. A wipe replays the handshake. If the assignment is missing or stale, the phone enrolls into nothing and setup just continues.

## Edge cases
- Activation lock from the previous user's Apple ID blocks Setup Assistant before enrollment. Remove the lock in ABM or have the user sign out first.
- A phone erased via Find My may need the original Apple ID at activation. That is separate from MDM enrollment; clear it first.
