Solution skill
Redis "MISCONF: RDB snapshot failed": disk and permission debugging
Complete solution
Fixes Redis refusing writes because background RDB saves are failing. Use when write commands return the MISCONF error. Not for AOF-specific failures, Redis being down, or replication problems.
TL;DR
Redis cannot write its RDB snapshot, so it stops accepting writes to protect your data from silent loss. In almost every case the cause is a full disk or a permissions problem on the snapshot directory. Check disk space and that the redis user can write to the directory, fix it, then confirm the next background save succeeds and writes resume.
Redis "MISCONF: RDB snapshot failed": disk and permission debuggingSteps
- Check disk space on the volume holding the RDB directory.
Expected: You know whether the disk is full or has room.
- Check the directory ownership and permissions against the user the redis process runs as, and confirm it can create files there.
Expected: You know whether permissions block the write.
- Fix the actual blocker: free disk space or correct the ownership and permissions.
Expected: The blocker is removed.
- Trigger a background save manually and confirm it completes, then verify writes succeed again.
Expected: The save reports OK and the MISCONF error is gone.
Use this when
- Write commands fail with MISCONF RDB snapshot failed.
- The last background save in the logs reported a failure.
- A disk filled up or directory permissions changed recently.
Not for this skill when
- AOF rewrite failures without RDB involvement.
- Redis down or unreachable.
- Replication or replica sync problems.
Variant phrasings
redis MISCONF RDB snapshot
redis background save failed
redis cant save rdb
Why it happens
Redis treats a failed background save as a data-safety emergency and refuses writes until a save succeeds. The save fails for mundane operational reasons - full disk, wrong directory ownership after a move, or a read-only filesystem - not for Redis bugs.
Edge cases
- The stop-writes-on-bgsave-error setting can be flipped as a temporary bypass, but only with a plan to fix the save - it exists to protect data.
- Fork can fail under memory pressure when overcommit is disabled - the save never even starts.
- A read-only remounted filesystem produces this with no obvious permission change.
- Very large datasets make fork slow; watch for latency spikes during saves even after the fix.
