## TL;DR
A 500 on a Signifyd case fetch is almost always transient. Retry a few times with backoff and a request id, validate the case id before retrying, and serve your last cached case state while Signifyd recovers. Escalate to a human if failures persist past a few minutes. Log every attempt so support has a clean timeline.

signifyd api returned 500 on case fetch: how to fix
```
## Use this when
- Case lookups fail intermittently with 500.
- One case fails while others succeed.
- The failure starts suddenly with no code change on your side.
## Not for this skill when
- You get 400s. That is a request shape problem, and retrying will not help.
- Cases stay open after investigation. That is a workflow issue.
## Steps
1. Validate the case id format before retrying: correct length, correct prefix, no whitespace. Verify: a malformed id is fixed, not retried.
2. Retry the fetch up to three times with exponential backoff and a unique request id per attempt. Verify: each attempt logs its own request id.
3. Check the Signifyd status page for an active incident. Verify: you know whether the 500 is yours or theirs.
4. While retries fail, serve your last cached case state and mark it stale. Verify: downstream code sees the stale flag, not silent old data.
5. If 500s persist past a few minutes, alert a human and open a support ticket with request ids and timestamps. Verify: the ticket carries the exact failing window.
## Variant phrasings
### signifyd case api 500 error
Shortest search form.
### signifyd 500 fetching case
Log-line wording.
### signifyd api server error case lookup
Support-ticket phrasing.
Compatibility: Signifyd Case API. 500 is a server-side failure; treat 4xx and 5xx differently in your retry logic.
## Why it happens
Transient 500s come from Signifyd's side: deploys, hot partitions, or a single case record hitting a bad path. Your code did not break; the service hiccupped. Bounded retries exist for exactly this.
## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Never retry 400s with the same backoff loop. A bad request fails forever.
- Cap retries. An unbounded loop turns their incident into your outage.
- Stale cache needs a visible flag. Serving old case state silently is worse than an error page.
- If the same single case 500s while others succeed, note the case id in the ticket. A record-specific 500 is a different bug from a service-wide one.
- Alert on rate, not on single 500s. One is noise; a sustained spike is the incident.
