Solution skill
greptile review timed out on large PR
Complete solution
Fixes Greptile review timeouts on large PRs by shrinking the review scope. Use when Greptile times out instead of posting a review. Not for Greptile findings disputes.
TL;DR
Greptile timed out because the diff is too large to review in one pass. Split the PR into smaller stacked PRs, or exclude generated files from the review scope, then re-request the review.
Error
Greptile: review timed out after 30 minutes on PR #512 (2400 files changed).Steps
- Confirm the size: check the files-changed count on the PR. Expected: a very large diff (thousands of files or MBs).
- Split the work: break the PR into smaller, independently reviewable PRs (stacked if needed). Expected: each PR is a reviewable size.
- Exclude generated files (lockfiles, bundles, snapshots) from Greptile's scope in its config. Expected: the review covers human-written code only.
- Re-request the Greptile review. Expected: it completes and posts findings.
When to use
- Greptile reports a timeout on the PR review.
- The PR diff is unusually large.
When not to use
- Greptile finished but you disagree with findings - address the findings.
- The timeout happens on small PRs too; that is a Greptile-side issue to report.
Tool compatibility
- Greptile AI review.
- GitHub.
Variant phrasings
Timeout on a monorepo PR touching many packages
Split by package - reviewers want that split anyway.
Generated files dominate the diff
Mark them generated (linguist) so reviewers and bots skip them.
Why it happens
Review bots have bounded time and context per PR. Past a certain diff size the analysis cannot finish, so the run times out instead of posting a partial, misleading review.
Edge cases
- Splitting a PR changes the merge order - stack them so each merges cleanly in sequence.
- A timeout is also a human signal: if the bot cannot review it, your teammates cannot either.
