## TL;DR
Free up licenses by reclaiming unused seats, or purchase more. The assignment fails because there are no unassigned licenses left in the quota.

## Error
```text
License assignment failed: prepaid quota exhausted
```

## Steps
1. Check the numbers: list subscribed SKUs with consumed versus total units. Expected: the exhausted SKU identified.
2. Reclaim obvious waste first: deprovisioned users, duplicate assignments, and service accounts holding user licenses. Expected: licenses freed without spending.
3. If the need is real, purchase additional licenses for the SKU. Expected: quota increased.
4. Retry the assignment. Expected: it succeeds.

## When to use
- M365 license assignment fails on exhausted quota
- Headcount grew past the purchased count
- True-up is due and the numbers do not add up

## When not to use
- Licenses are available but assignment still fails (a conflict or rule problem)
- The error names a specific conflicting service plan
- You want to reduce spend (reclaim first, buy last)

## Tool compatibility
Microsoft 365 admin center and Entra group-based licensing.

### Variant phrasings
### quota exhausted right after a renewal
The renewal may have changed the license count. Verify the new totals.

### one SKU exhausted while others have spares
Rebalance assignments across SKUs where the plans allow it.

## Why it happens
License counts are purchased, not elastic. Growth, forgotten deprovisioning, and SKU changes silently consume the buffer until the next assignment fails.
