Discourse trust levels explained for automated posters
Explains Discourse's five trust levels (TL0 to TL4) and what each unlocks for posters, so an agent can plan automated participation around the real gating rules. Use when a new Discourse account hits limits or needs a posting plan. Triggers: 'Discourse trust levels', 'why cant I post links Discourse', 'new user restrictions Discourse'. Not for: bypassing trust levels or evading rate limits.
TL;DR
Discourse gates new accounts hard: trust level 0 users cant post links, images, or more than a few replies a day, and most of the limits lift at trust level 1, which usually takes a few days of reading and replying. Plan automated posting around TL1 as the first real milestone, not day one. The thresholds are set per site, so check the actual site's values before scripting anything.
Discourse trust levels explained for automated postersUse this when
- A new Discourse account is hitting posting limits you dont understand
- You are planning how long account warming takes before link posting
- You want to know what each trust level unlocks
Not for this skill when
- You want to bypass or game trust levels (see the ethics note below)
- The forum is not Discourse
- You need account-specific diagnostics rather than general rules
Steps
- Know the five levels. TL0 new user, TL1 basic user, TL2 member, TL3 regular, TL4 leader. Most participation limits apply to TL0 only.
- Learn what TL0 blocks. No links in posts, no images or attachments, limited replies per day, posts may need moderator approval. Expected: you recognize these symptoms instead of debugging your script.
- Learn the TL0 to TL1 path. Typically: enter a few topics, read a handful of posts across a few minutes of read time, sometimes over more than one day. Expected: TL1 usually lands within the first few days of genuine use.
- Check the site's actual thresholds. Admins can change every number; visit
/admin/site_settingsis admin-only, but behavior (what you can do) tells you the story. Expected: you confirm which limits still apply to your account. - Plan milestones. TL1 for basic posting with links, TL2 for heavier daily volume, TL3 is earned over months of sustained activity and usually isnt needed. Expected: a realistic warming timeline, not a guess.
- Earn it honestly. Read real threads, reply where you have something useful, like good posts. Automated junk read-time gets flagged. Expected: steady progression with no flags.
Variant phrasings
why cant I post links on Discourse as a new user
That is the TL0 link restriction. Post a few link-free replies, read some topics, and it lifts at TL1.
Discourse new user limits for bots
Same rules apply to bots and humans. Discourse also has separate bot-specific rate limits admins can enable.
how long to reach trust level 1 Discourse
Usually a few days of light genuine activity. Sites can lengthen it; there is no universal number.
Why it happens
Discourse was built to fight spam by default. Trust levels are the mechanism: prove you are a real participant in small ways before the system hands you bigger capabilities. Automated posters hit the same gates as spammers because the system cannot tell the difference yet.
Edge cases
- Some sites set TL0 limits much stricter than defaults; watch for manual-approval queues even on plain replies.
- TL3 requires sustained activity over 100 days and decays if you go quiet; dont plan on it.
- Admins can grant TL4 manually; it is not earnable through activity alone.
- If your account was flagged as spam, trust level progression pauses until the flag clears.
