okta verify not showing approval request on apple watch
Fixes Okta Verify approval requests not reaching the Apple Watch: checks iPhone enrollment, notification settings, and watch mirroring. Use when pushes arrive on the phone but not the watch. Not for number-matching policies or phone-side push failures.
TL;DR
The Apple Watch Okta Verify app only mirrors pushes when the iPhone app is the enrolled factor and iPhone notifications are allowed. In most cases the watch is fine and the iPhone notification settings are the problem. Check enrollment state, notification permission, and watch mirroring before re-enrolling anything.
The query
okta verify not showing approval request on apple watchUse this when
- user gets Okta pushes on the iPhone but nothing on the watch
- watch was paired after Okta Verify was already enrolled on the phone
- approvals appear on the watch but tapping them does nothing
Not for
- number matching prompts (the watch renders those differently)
- pushes not arriving on any device (re-enroll the phone factor first)
- Android watches (this flow is Apple Watch only)
Steps
- Ask the user to start a sign-in and watch both the iPhone and the watch. Expected output: you learn whether the push also fails on the phone, which changes the diagnosis
- On the iPhone, open Okta Verify and confirm the account shows as enrolled, not as a setup prompt. Expected output: the account row shows an enrolled state
- Check iPhone Settings, Notifications, Okta Verify: Allow Notifications on, with banners and sounds enabled. Expected output: notifications fully allowed for Okta Verify
- In the Watch app on the iPhone, confirm the Okta Verify watch app is installed and set to mirror iPhone alerts. Expected output: mirroring toggled on for the watch app
- Confirm the watch is paired, on the same Apple ID, and connected (not in airplane mode). Expected output: the Watch app shows the watch as connected
- If taps on the watch do nothing, update Okta Verify on the iPhone; the watch app follows the iPhone app version. Expected output: latest app version installed on the phone
- Still nothing: remove Okta Verify from the iPhone, re-enroll, then re-add the watch app. Expected output: a fresh test push reaches the watch
