## TL;DR

AppRole login needs the right role id paired with a valid secret id for an existing role. Most failures mix up the two values or target a deleted role; verify each piece separately.

## Error

```text
vault approle login failed: invalid role id error
```

## Steps

1. Confirm the role exists and is enabled at the auth mount. Expected: the role is present.
2. Read back the role id from Vault and compare with what the client sends. Expected: exact match or the mismatch found.
3. Check the secret id is valid and not expired; generate a fresh one to test. Expected: a known-good pair.
4. Verify the client sends role id and secret id to the right fields (they get swapped). Expected: correct mapping.
5. Retry login with the verified pair. Expected: a token.

## When to use

- AppRole logins failing with invalid role id.
- Setting up machine auth to Vault.

## When not to use

- Token auth failures (different mechanism).
- Permission errors after successful login (policy issue).

## Tool compatibility

- Vault AppRole auth method.

## Variant phrasings

### approle authentication failed

Same triage.

### invalid secret id

The other half of the pair.

## Why it happens

Role ids are long opaque strings that get truncated or swapped with secret ids, and roles get renamed or deleted while clients keep old values.

## Edge cases

- Secret ids expire; a once-working pair stops working on schedule.
- Wrapped secret ids need unwrapping before use; the wrapped value is not the secret id.
- Multiple auth mounts mean the role must be looked up under the right mount.
