Solution skill

fraud agent re-fetched device fingerprints on every loop iteration

Version 1

Complete solution

Stops fraud agents re-fetching device fingerprints on every review loop: stores the fingerprint result on the case at first collection, keys reuse to the session and order, and re-fetches only on session change. Use when device data calls repeat per iteration and slow reviews. Not for cases where the customer genuinely changes device mid session, which should trigger a fresh fetch by design.

When it applies

Instructions

TL;DR

A device fingerprint describes a session, not a step, so fetching it inside a review loop buys the same answer repeatedly at the price of latency, vendor calls, and occasional mismatches when the collector rotates identifiers between calls. Fetch once when the case opens or the session is established, store the fingerprint payload and its session id on the case, and pass that stored value to every later step: RIS inquiry, rules, and review display. Re-fetch only when the session id changes or the stored value is older than your case window.

fraud agent re-fetched device fingerprints on every loop iteration

Use this when

  • Logs show a fingerprint call for every loop iteration or retry of one case.
  • Review latency grows with loop count.
  • Slightly different fingerprint values appear across steps of the same case.

Not for this skill when

  • The customer switches device or browser mid checkout. A new fetch is correct there; key it to the new session.
  • Fingerprints are never fetched at all. That is the missing collector problem, not reuse.

Steps

  1. Count fingerprint calls per case in logs for a day and identify the loop or retry path issuing the repeats. Verify: you have the repeat rate and the code path responsible.
  2. Move collection to case open: fetch once, store the full payload, session id, and fetch time on the case record. Verify: a new case shows exactly one fetch and a stored payload.
  3. Change every consumer, inquiry, rules, enrichment, to read the stored payload and fail visibly if it is missing rather than fetching silently. Verify: a staged missing payload raises a data error instead of a hidden extra call.
  4. Define refresh conditions explicitly: new session id, order materially changed, or stored value older than the case SLA, and log which condition fired on any refetch. Verify: every refetch in logs names its trigger condition.
  5. Confirm the improvement: repeat the per case call count after a week and compare latency on multi iteration cases. Verify: fingerprint calls per case sit at one for standard cases in the report.

Variant phrasings

agent fetches fingerprint every iteration waste

Waste phrasing.

device fingerprint should be cached per case

Caching phrasing.

duplicate fingerprint calls slow fraud review

Latency phrasing.

Compatibility: Kount Device Data Collector, Sift, Fingerprint, and similar device intelligence services, with any agent loop framework. Reuse windows should follow the vendor session model.

Why it happens

Loop based agents re-run steps on retries and re-evaluations, and a fetch written as step one of a step block runs every time the block runs. Because each fetch succeeds, nothing alerts; the cost hides in latency and vendor metering, and the subtle risk hides in inconsistency, since two fetches minutes apart can return rotated or enriched values that make one case look like two devices.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Do not share a stored fingerprint across different orders from the same customer without checking session identity. Reuse is per session and case, not per customer forever.
  • Store the raw payload, not just a score. Later steps need different fields than the first consumer did.
  • If the vendor bills per call, this fix pays for itself measurably. Report the saved call volume so the pattern is not reintroduced.
