## TL;DR
A project that will not open usually died mid-save, ran out of disk, or was written by a mismatched Burp version, and the main file may be unrecoverable. Stop writing to that disk, try the automatic backup and any temporary project copies first, and if the file is gone, rebuild a clean project and re-import the still-readable exports rather than losing the engagement record.

```text
burp project file failed to open: corrupt project on tester machine
```

## Use this when
- Burp reports the project file is corrupt or fails during project loading for an engagement project.
- The machine crashed, lost power, or filled its disk while Burp was saving.

## Not for this skill when
- The project opens but is simply the wrong file. Locate the right project before doing recovery work.
- The file was stored only on failing media. Send the disk for recovery; do not keep writing to it.

## Steps
1. Stop: do not open and re-save over the corrupt file, and do not let Burp create a new project at the same path. Copy the file aside read-only. Verify: Verify: you have a preserved copy of the corrupt file untouched for any later recovery attempt.
2. Check the same folder and Burp's backup locations for automatic backup or temporary copies from the last good session. Verify: Verify: any candidate backup has a plausible size and an earlier timestamp.
3. Open a copy of the newest backup in Burp, never the original backup itself, and inspect the site map and proxy history for completeness. Verify: Verify: the backup opens and contains engagement data up to a known point.
4. If no backup opens, create a fresh project and import what survives: exported site maps, saved items, and proxy history exports from the engagement folder. Verify: Verify: the new project contains the imported findings and notes, with the gap in time clearly known.
5. Change the habits that caused it: save projects on a disk with headroom, keep the automatic backup option on, and export key items at the end of each testing day. Verify: Verify: the project settings show backups enabled and a test export exists.

## Variant phrasings
### burp project file corrupt backup recovery
The recovery phrasing.
### burp crashed saving project lost site map
The crash phrasing.
### burp project will not open version mismatch
The version phrasing.

Compatibility: Compatibility: Burp Suite Professional project files; Community edition has limited project saving, so export-based recovery matters more there.

## Why it happens
Burp projects are large single files updated in place. An interrupted write, a full disk, or a version writing a format the other cannot read leaves the file internally inconsistent, and Burp's loader refuses rather than guessing. Backups and exports are separate writes, which is why they so often survive when the main file does not.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Project files for engagements contain client data; store recovery copies under the same handling rules as the original, never on personal cloud drives.
- Opening a newer project in an older Burp can corrupt on re-save; align versions across the team for an engagement.
- Note the data gap in the report appendix if part of a day was lost, rather than presenting the rebuilt project as complete.
