## TL;DR
The run did almost everything right and lost it at the finish because state lived until the end. Save each page's data and cursor immediately after receiving it, so any crash costs at most the in-flight page. When the 500 hits, the agent should retry that page with backoff, and if the provider stays down, exit with a resumable state and a clear report: all pages but the last are secured. A provider error on page fifty should never re-cost pages one to forty-nine.

```text
bank API returned 500 on the last statement page and the agent's run crashed before saving state
```

## Use this when
- The pull crashes on a late page, here the last, with a bank API 500.
- Rerunning starts from page one because prior pages were not persisted.
- The provider recovers later, so the failure is transient.

## Not for this skill when
- The API 500s consistently on the same page's content. That page may contain a record that breaks the provider's own export; escalate with the page parameters.
- The crash is in the agent's parsing of the last page, not the API response. Fix the parser path; persistence still helps but is not the root cause.

## Steps
1. Change the pull to persist each page, data plus next cursor, immediately on receipt, before requesting the next page. Verify: the stored state after each page is inspectable
2. Reproduce or simulate a late-page failure and confirm the run exits with saved state and a resumable marker instead of a bare crash. Verify: the failure leaves all prior pages secured
3. Add bounded retry with backoff for 500 responses on a single page, distinct from the run's overall deadline. Verify: a transient 500 is absorbed without losing the run
4. Resume the failed run from the saved cursor and fetch only the outstanding page or pages. Verify: the resumed run does not re-request completed pages
5. Complete the pull and tie totals to the statement controls. Verify: the combined original plus resumed data matches controls exactly once

## Variant phrasings
### bank API 500 last page agent crashed state not saved
The last-page crash phrasing.
### agent persist per page resumable pull provider error
When adding per-page persistence.

Compatibility: Bank API pagination and error handling in agent pull jobs with per-page checkpointing.

## Why it happens
Long pulls are chains of small successes, and their value is cumulative. Holding results in memory until the end converts the chain into a single bet that nothing fails for the entire duration, a bet that gets worse with every page added. Providers return 500s transiently even when healthy, so the bet eventually loses. Per-page persistence is the standard engineering answer because it prices any single failure at one page.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Write page data and its cursor atomically where possible; a cursor saved without its data, or data without its cursor, creates a subtle gap on resume.
- A 500 that repeats on resume at the same cursor deserves escalation with request details, because the provider may have a poisoned record.
- Report partial completion honestly in run summaries: pages secured, pages outstanding, and the resume command or schedule.
