E0000206 session expired" Okta license API token
Fixes Okta API calls failing with E0000206 session expired on a license audit token. Use when Okta returns E0000206 for API requests. Not for invalid-token or rate-limit errors.
TL;DR
Create a fresh Okta API token and retry; E0000206 means the session behind the token expired. API tokens do not live forever, and expired ones fail every call until replaced.
Error
E0000206: Session expired. The session associated with this token has expired.Steps
- Confirm the error code on the failing call: the response body names E0000206. Expected: the expired-session cause confirmed, not a permissions problem.
- In the Okta admin console, go to Security then API, and create a new API token for the service account. Copy it once; it is shown only at creation. Expected: a new working token in hand.
- Store the new token in your secret manager, replacing the old value, and update the audit agent or script to read from there. Expected: the credential store holds the fresh token.
- Re-run the license API call. Expected: 200 responses and the E0000206 gone.
When to use
- Okta API returns E0000206 session expired
- A license audit or scan suddenly fails on all Okta calls
- The token worked yesterday and nothing else changed
When not to use
- The error is E0000011 invalid token (the token is wrong or revoked, not expired)
- The error is E0000018 rate limit (a throttling problem)
- Calls fail with 403 (a scope or permission problem)
Tool compatibility
Okta API with SSWS API tokens. OAuth service apps use a different rotation flow.
Variant phrasings
E0000206 on a token that was just created
The token was created but the admin session used to mint it expired oddly; create it again from a fresh admin session.
session expired mid-scan for a long-running audit
Long scans outlive token sessions. Create the token right before the scan, or break the scan into shorter runs.
Why it happens
Okta ties API tokens to sessions with finite lifetimes. Anything that ends the session (expiry, admin logout, policy change) invalidates the token, and every subsequent API call fails with E0000206 until a new token is minted.
